To ask for video interview tips

Have a video interview soon and I always feel I look (more)awful on FaceTime than in real life Any tips for lighting or make up or anything? I know it doesn’t go on looks but I don’t want to look terrible!

Are you doing it on a phone or on a laptop?

First suggestion would be do a trial with a friend and try all seating positions and chin angles and your lighting options.

Usually the problem (if skyping on a laptop) is the camera is too low so the person is looking down. Stick it on a couple of piled up dictionaries or thick books to raise it.

Cameras tend to make you look washed out so much stronger makeup particularly eye make up tends to look better - but definitely have a trial.

Wear a top that is not too distracting but flatters you. avoid patterns - something plain but not too pale (unless you have darker skin or a good fake tan) otherwise you'll look all white and not too bright distracting like neon green.

Obvious things would be do it in natural light and face a window, rather than create a dark shadow by having your back to it. Plain background if you can. And remember to look at your camera, not at yourself on the screen!

I always wear more makeup when on camera. I will also look directly down the lens as often as possible because that simulates eye contact.

Don't forget the background - make sure it is plain or very very function/tidy (bookcase is organised, no knickers drying on a radiator, etc).

A tip I was given by a recruiter was to make sure the camera was at or slightly above eye level. Nothing worse than interviewing someone with the feeling you are sat in their lap.
