Nursery feeding 3yo chocolate chip weetabix every morning - AIBU

Not the first time I've had food issues with the nursery... they're great and a lovely bunch of ladies, barely any staff turnover.. Dd age 3 has had the same key worker since she was 8mo
However they feed the kids utter shit some days. I've raised it and been told that it's a "treat" however they have these treats every day (chocolate biscuits, icecream, cake etc) and now the chocolate chip weetabix being out on the table every day is starting to take the pee a little.
She goes 4 full days so cant exactly avoid it...
Aibu to complain (again) or do I just suck it up and accept it

I get the feeling you’re exaggerating wildly now

I really don't understand all the posts exclaiming surprise that any nursery would serve children squash or unhealthy cereals and accusing OP of exaggerating. Before my DD started school we had a nightmare trying to find a nursery setting that served genuinely healthy food. Most claimed to be healthy but weren't. Her preschool had a healthy eating policy and even said on their website they had won some kind of award for being a "healthy school" but still thought it was fine to give kids squash everyday and two slices of white toast with butter and jam for a snack in between meals. The menu plans we were shown were completely different to what they actually served. Lots of friends had similar issues with nurseries.

Audreyhelp · 23/05/2019 08:10

You might find the cake they are given is low sugar . All cereals apart from porridge are pretty bad. Wouldn’t be happy with coco pops but choc weetabix isn’t too bad.
I have nannied for children that aren’t allowed any sugar they used to get a spoon and spoon it straight in their mouth . Also the very greedy children at parties.
Never worked at a nursery that served squash that’s bad .

Passthecherrycoke · 23/05/2019 08:17

White bread/ chocolate wheetabix/ jam/ honey can all be part of the balanced diet the nursery are obliged to achieve though. That’s not so much an issue. Although if you knew they were lying to meet these early years settings obligations you should’ve informed ofsted Shock they’re simply deceiving them and the parents and not quite sure why anyone would just sit back and accept that as though it’s to be expected?

Squash though, ime, is fairly demonised at nursery and you won’t find one that serves anything but milk and water (and just think how much harder it is to arrange squash for 20 rather than water)

Both the private workplace nursery my two DCs went to, and the school nursery attached to their school, serve only milk and water. Children can bring their own squash in bottles but neither serve squash.
I am pretty sure this is standard.

Unihorn · 23/05/2019 10:05

MinisterforCheekyFuckery eating the equivalent of one or two squares of chocolate a day is not going to kill anyone, particularly not if you are active and have an otherwise healthy, balanced diet. Calling food treats is what causes people to have so many problems with food. I eat chocolate everyday and so do my children who are 1 and 2. We also go for a walk every day and offer fruit and veg with every meal.

EmeraldShamrock · 23/05/2019 10:35

I agree, it is not great.
I would speak to them about rethinking the menu, it wouldn't be fair to give give DD plain, while the others have chocolate.
As she has the same key worker I wouldn't move her, I am surprised they feed the DC sugary cereal.

PrincessTiggerlily · 23/05/2019 11:08

Do you do that from work?

Napqueen1234 · 23/05/2019 11:51

At our nursery we just ask if DD can be given fruit/yogurt etc if they have cake for dessert. Its always a home made cake/pudding (and tbh we will probably drop this rule soon as shes coming up for 2) but as she started at 7 months we didn't want her getting used to sweet stuff 2-3 times a week as we prefer to be able to 'treat' her at the weekend. Having said that if shes a healthy weight and burns it all off I wouldn't worry too much!

Unihorn · 23/05/2019 13:22

PrincessTiggerlily
Well no but presumably children eat at home for at least some of their 18+ years with parents even if they are in full time nursery for the first 3 years...? And I'm fairly certain nurseries and school require a bare minimum of movement and exercise every day.

DannyWhizBang · 23/05/2019 13:42

Chocolate chip weetabix has so little chocolate I doubt she even knows its in there! Massive eye roll here at so many of these posts.
your attitude could be worse for her than the cereal

AbbyHammond · 23/05/2019 13:48

Choc chip weetabix in itself is a non issue, but
Choc chip weetabix
Biscuits and squash
Burger, chips and cake
is an absolutely shit diet four days a week and I doubt many people would be happy to pay for their children to be fed that.

sweeneytoddsrazor · 23/05/2019 14:16

Everything in moderation is a good policy. Fruit may be very good for the body but it is not very good for the teeth. Plenty of yogurts are full of sugar and some of the low calorie ones contain aspartame.

yabadabadontdoit · 23/05/2019 15:55

OP send OFSTED a copy of your dd diary saying she’s had burger and chips, ice cream, cake, 2 chocolate biscuits, squash etc every day. They’ll soon sort it.

nooriginalnameshere · 24/05/2019 14:04

No excuse for giving squash to under 2's. just why would you? At school Kids are only allowed water so such a silly habit to get in to.

TulipsTulipsTulips · 24/05/2019 14:37

@unihorn

Why do you give your one year old chocolate every day?

Unihorn · 24/05/2019 14:56

Because I eat chocolate biscuits everyday with tea and she's usually sitting next to me.

DianaT1969 · 24/05/2019 17:23

Ask the nursery for a written breakdown of the amount of sugar they are making available to children daily. Ask for it in grams and their thoughts on the nutritional benefits of this sugar i.e why are they choosing it, over foods with more nutritional benefits that children would enjoy just as much.

Halloumimuffin · 24/05/2019 18:20

Why do I feel like the next generation will be a bunch of orthorexics.

AbbyHammond · 24/05/2019 18:40

I don't know - that's odd. All the evidence is that children are increasingly obese.

LaurieMarlow · 24/05/2019 18:43

All the evidence is that children are increasingly obese.

Absolutely this.

Passthecherrycoke · 24/05/2019 18:49

Childhood obesity is actually falling/ stabilising! It has been for about 4 years. Really great initiatives from the labour government (Grin) like chnage4 life etc, as education/ subsidies. I don’t know why they keep so quiet about it being so successful- maybe people aren’t interested they just want to repeat the mantra about fat kids and failing parents

Aftereights91 · 24/05/2019 18:53

In the nicest possible way love it's just a bloody cereal. They're feeding her something you're not hundred percent happy with, it's not like they're hitting her or locking her in a cupboard. Just chill, if you're not happy have a word but it's not a big deal

Hmmmminteresting · 07/06/2019 23:06

Managed to get my hands in their rotated menus.... thoughts?
