CF parking thread - was I unreasonable (diagram included)

Came home today to an interloper being a CF. They were sat in their car outside my house in such a way that the only place I could park outside my house was to block in a car and block the neighbours drive.

I pulled up, got out, and asked them nicely if they could just reverse a few feet so I could park and not have to go out and move later.

Her engine was running with a child in the backseat.

I got told no as she’d only be a few minutes and she was waiting for someone from the houses opposite.

I pointed out all she had to do was reverse a few feet by putting it in gear and moving back. There was nothing behind her and no obstacle.

She point blank refused.

I was seething. I know it’s inconsequential. I waited until she left then went back out to move my car back.

I just can’t see any reason why you wouldn’t do that!

She was an arse.

Some people take delight in being petty and inconveniencing other people.

Thankfully they tend to be in a minority.

Jon65 · 22/05/2019 18:05

I found buying a house with parking helped.

bridgetreilly · 22/05/2019 18:08

So, you found somewhere to park, in fact? All she had stopped you from doing was parking on your preferred bit of curb, not from pulling into your drive? YABU. She's allowed to park there, just as much as you are.

But admittedly, she is being a bit unreasonable for not being willing to move at all if you asked her nicely.

PatriciaHolm · 22/05/2019 18:10

She was an arse for refusing, yes. But surely you could have parked behind her to avoid blocking someone in?

Imoen · 22/05/2019 18:11

That would have blocked the house next door

I couldn't get that worked up about this, you found somewhere to park. I'm a bit confused as to why you then went back out and moved your car back into the space again once she left if you had parking elsewhere.

Are you one of those people who feel entitled to the space outside their own house?

BrokenWing · 22/05/2019 18:15

Why not just park behind her, house A doesn't have a drive so what are you blocking?

flowery · 22/05/2019 18:16

How was she an “interloper”? From the diagram she was legally parked and not blocking anyone in or out?

EskewedBeef · 22/05/2019 18:17

You'd already parked up, so why fuss about asking someone to move a few feet so you could then park up again alongside your preferred stretch of kerb?

mrsm43s · 22/05/2019 18:20

She was being unecesserily rude by refusing to move, but you are a CF who seems to think you have ownership or rights over the bit of public road outside your house, which you categorically do not. If you want a personal parking space, you need to buy a house with one, not just commandeer the public road!

coffeeforone · 22/05/2019 18:22

YANBU, if I understand correctly there was nowhere for you to park without blocking someone unless she kindly moved a few feet. I'd be annoyed.

GertrudeCB · 22/05/2019 18:30

You dont have an automatic right to park in front of your house.

Imoen · 22/05/2019 18:30

Exactly. If I’d parked behind her I would have blocked the other neighbour in (I didn’t include it in the diagram as I didn’t think it relevant).

I just can’t understand why if your sitting in the car with the engine running you would refuse to move back a few feet.

flumpybear · 22/05/2019 18:34

She was being an arsehole!

I'd have kept asking why? And also mentioning that she's dabbling with her friends personal / neighbourly relationships with their neighbours by being petty and not doing a very tiny car manuoevre - I may have said oh you can't drive very well I take it if that's such an effort for you

Janleverton · 22/05/2019 18:35

I had this a week ago. Came home to woman sat in car with engine running taking up 2 spaces. I didn’t approach her but seethed. Periodically looked outside and she was still there. 40 minutes later she drove off, no one being picked up, she was just looking at her phone. Couldn’t work out why she was there - totally resi area - and fuming more about the car idling for that long. So bad for the environment.

cantfindname · 22/05/2019 18:36

I think she wanted to read about herself on MN.

thankyourforthemusic · 22/05/2019 18:40

But was she blocking any driveways ?
If not than how if you park in front or behind you are blocking neighbours?
If she was not then I can see her point it's a public road you don't own the space on the road but if she was blocking access then deffo a cf .

PineappleTart · 22/05/2019 18:41

Just park elsewhere, she didn't have to move

SavingSpaces2019 · 22/05/2019 19:05

Should have whipped out your phone and started videoing her/the car......that usually makes them move!

TrixieFranklin · 22/05/2019 19:22

@SavingSpaces2019 and done what with the video.. shown the police someone parked up legally on the public highway? Or just as a completely empty threat?

Imoen · 22/05/2019 19:53

I get it was no big deal and there was not no right to park there.

It just if someone said to me - could you just nudge back a few feet and it didn’t involve me doing anything other than selecting reverse and feathering the accelerator/clutch and it was making their life easier - I can see any reason not to unless I’m being a twat

We've recently moved and there's space for two cars between our drive and our attached neighbour's drive. I've noticed that for some reason the people who park along that bit of kerb park in the middle so anyone else wanting to park there would be across a driveway. If we had a visitor arriving (only room for one car on the drive) and I saw the driver of one of these cars park in the middle I'd go out and ask them to move back.

YANBU to be a bit peeved that the woman wouldn't move for you. I would be. But at least she wasn't blocking a driveway.

SavingSpaces2019 · 22/05/2019 20:41

and done what with the video..
in my experience telling them i would be uploading the video to SM so everyone could see their dickish behaviour has always worked.....because they are SM sites where you can do this.....

HolesinTheSoles · 22/05/2019 20:45

I never get people who use "she has a legal right to park there" as some kind of excuse. Surely you shouldn't need the law to force you to be a half decent human being? It would have cost her zero effort to move. I also hate dickheads who sit for ten minutes in stationary cars with the engine running.

HildaWazzo · 22/05/2019 20:51

YANBU. It’s bad enough when people park in the middle of what would be space for two cars, but her refusing to move back when she was actually in the car with the engine running just takes it to a new level of arsehole.
