To be pissed off with missing school jumpers

I know I'm probably being unreasonable and it's all par for the course, and this is just a bit of a rant/vent but...

Ds is in reception in an academy, with a typically ridiculous academy uniform with jumpers that are £8 a pop and stocked by only one shop, with either a fiver in bus fare, or a fiver postage to get new ones.

Ds has lost three of his four jumpers in the last three weeks, all with names in, not one in lost property. They were all in good nick, not faded (as he had enough that they didn't need washing too often), no holes etc.

Ds has a drawer to put his stuff in in class but on the playground jumpers etc just get dumped in a pile and this is where they have all been lost.

I strongly suspect that someone else's child has gone home with them and they (parents) have just kept them.

I know last year his coat (which was pretty distinctive, had patches sewn on that were made by a friend so a bit one of a kind) went 'missing' until I spotted it on another child, with the name label cut out.

Aibu to be sick of having to a) replace uniform so often and b) that it's so bloody expensive, why can't they just have £3 generic asda jumpers ffs?

You are definitely not BU! Really winds me up my reception and year one have had 5 each this term. All have been named both are down to two each. One of the other parents has been overheard saying they get their older dc to take things from lost property and take the labels out Angry fucks me right off!
It doesn’t get any better though oldest is yr 7 at an academy and had just lost a £100 P.E. Kit embroidered with his initials. ( yes you read that right £100 for a p.e. kit robbing academy bastards)

I don’t know if it’s an Irish thing or just the school I teach in and my DD’s school also does this-they have to ask to take off their jumper and when they do the jumper goes straight into their school bag. Dd has never lost a jumper, and in my school there is never jumpers lying around (in fact we don’t even have a lost uniform box) I remember when I was in the UK teaching the jumpers would be left EVERYWHERE and parents were forever asking me to sort it! 😩

Our school brought in a jumper bin. All jumpers and cardigans taken off went in the bin and then at hometime they were given to the correct child - providing they were labelled. Hardly any lost jumpers now.

Worth an email to school; they should implement some sort of policy. If they have that amount of theft the kids need lockers. Until they do that I wouldn't replace the lost clothes. Not on, really.

My godson went to a favoured public school and had his PE kit stolen several times. Very annoying, but sadly not unusual.

herculepoirot2 · 22/05/2019 17:31

If my child came home with someone else’s jumper I probably wouldn’t notice, to be honest. I doubt it’s theft, just errors.

Pipandmum · 22/05/2019 17:35

Do you have WhatsApp group for the parents in the class. We get the ‘my child’s lost his jumper can you check your child’s bag’ all the time. I don’t think we have anyone stealing just parents don’t always check name tags and assume it belongs to them. My son used to come home with all sorts of stuff shoved in his game bag as they were all identical - including one school shoe!

MrsBosh · 22/05/2019 17:40

That's really annoying, especially if they are named. Can't believe people can be so brazen to cut labels out.

If in the playground are they allowed to go into the cloakroom to put in bag instead? If that's possible perhaps you start to encourage him to take more notice of and responsibility for his belongings i.e. remembering where he put them. I used to work in a nursery and even some of the more switched on 3 year olds could do this. At 5yo (or nearly) he needs to start to do this too Smile.

herculepoirot2 You doubt it’s theft when the coat had the name label cut out?! My daughter is in school nursery and since September her book bag went missing and was not returned. Then her wellies went missing. Both labelled. We brought her new wellies. A couple of weeks ago DD says “guess what Mummy, Child X came in today wearing my wellies”... DH said I should ask the Mum for them back. I said it’s not worth the confrontation, however I’m fairly sure this is a sign of things to come.

BillywigSting · 22/05/2019 17:44

No WhatsApp group, we don't even all know each others names, I do know there has been definite theft before though.

Can't help but think that if they were all worn out and full of holes they wouldn't disappear quite so often Hmm

No, someone definitely nicked the coat. I meant the jumpers. Unless you look at the label, one jumper is going to look very like another.

Sunnysidegold · 22/05/2019 17:49

I'm a teacher and cannot believe how many people don't name their kid's jumper and then expect me to magically locate it.

My friend gets her child's initials professionally sewn onto the back of the jumper neck so it's easy to spot.

Most times it's just an innocent mistake but that's horrible that some people are blatantly stealing thibgs. I would definitely contact the school.
