To think I can wear a red dress to an interview

All the search results on google say that red is a bit much to wear in an interview and can come across negatively. AIBU to think it depends a bit on the role and the organisation too? If you are applying for a leadership role in a formal but not conservative organisation it might actually work well.

I am thinking of wearing a red dress ( formal, conservative, shift dress) with a black jacket to a senior level interview mainly because I am tired of wearing grey and black. Long interview process, have already had quite a few rounds and this is the last one.

What do you think - stick to boring neutrals or take a chance?

I always wear one item that is bright, purple top, red top etc as you stand out a bit more. Also it helps when they meet a million people ‘i though Jane came across well’ ‘which one was she again?’ ‘The lady with the red dress’ ‘oh yeah she was good’

Take a chance! And good luck.

I wore a dark red/maroony dress to an interview once. With black boots and a black jacket. Nailed it Grin

Yes you can wear red, so long as the cut and quality is commensurate with the role level.

Good luck with the interview.

Go for it! I always wear a bright blouse, or colourful jacket or so to interviews, never been a problem, I’m in healthcare.

WhoKnewBeefStew · 22/05/2019 09:20

Yes of course you can.

MrsGrannyWeatherwax · 22/05/2019 09:22

If you feel positive and confident in it and it’s still appropriate why not?

I love a red shift dress

I had a scarlet suit with gold buttons and full on shoulder pads for interviews, was never turned down. That was in the 90s though 😁, no idea what the form is now.
Red certainly signals confidence.

Go for it! My interview dress when I was looking for my current job was red, worn with a black suit jacket. Got a really good job that I didn't think I had a hope in hell of getting!

stucknoue · 22/05/2019 09:27

Yes it's fine but the style and cut matters, definitely not too short or revealing

WorraLiberty · 22/05/2019 09:31

Go for it.

I've interviewed so many people over the years for senior roles and I ca't remember what a single one of them wore.

Unless you wore something completely outrageous like a snorkel and flippers, accompanied by a bum skimming micro mini skirt, they'll be more interested in the interview I'm sure Grin

Thank you all. Red dress it is. Probably with black courts. Tights - 10 den, black or sheer?

I assure you it is not a mini, doesn't have a plunging neckline and certainly no flippers :) the image made me smile

Dress sounds great. Black tights in Summer are weird. Definitely go for nude/sheer.

Gardenowl · 22/05/2019 10:22

Thanks thecat, where I am at the moment (travelling for work) it is thunderstorms and rain so can't imagine summer :)

Red is my favourite colour. Usually pair with voodoo jabou stockings or Schiaparelli. Nice stockings really make an outfit. Voodoo nightshade is a great alternative to black (I'm not such a fan of black).

If you're super pale jabou will probably be too dark, but it's always worked great for me with red.

GreenHatHacker · 22/05/2019 11:14

I have a red 'interview jacket'. It's never failed me!

SamStephens · 22/05/2019 11:18

Wear it! Definitely! I have a pair of Louboutins that I wear for every interview and that tiny pop of red under the shoe always makes an impression, it’s subtle but noticeable to get a compliment.

Despite me having a teacher who told me once that wearing red made me come off as “evil” (he was unhinged I swear!).
