I've posted about this in children's health but didn't get much traffic.
Last week my 5 weeks old baby was put in to an induced coma, intubated and transferred 104 miles from home to an intensive care unit after going in to Sceptic Shock.
This was caused by a form of meningitis called Parechovirus.
It's so rare in the UK that my local hospital had never heard of it, and therefore we know very little. From research it's mostly in Australia, but it causes developmental delays, hearing loss and cerebral palsy. We won't know until baby grows and does or does not reach milestones.
Can I ask if anyone out there has any experience of this virus please?
Whilst I'm here.. a gentle remind to please please please never kiss babies on the mouth. This virus doesn't really affect anyone over 3 months age, but is critical to babies under 3 months. It is caused by saliva or nasal secretions.. I.e. someone carrying the virus coughed / sneezed / kissed my baby.
