to think that I don't need two dining tables?

Friend doesn't understand how I cope without a kitchen table. I pointed out that we have a table in the knocked-through lounge-diner but apparently that is a 'dining table' and not the same. She does not have a separate dining room, and therefore only a 'kitchen table' in her big kitchen-diner. AIBU to think that having two dining tables would be ridiculous? Or am I massively missing out by not having a kitchen table? What makes a 'kitchen table' better than a 'dining table'?

Eh? I don't even have one 😂 what does she do with a "kitchen table" 😂

Your friend is being silly. Your set-up works for you, so why would you change it?

ZippyBungleandGeorge · 21/05/2019 17:24

I don't have a kitchen table, just a dining table. IME kitchen tables often get covered in junk and day to day detritus

UpToonGirl · 21/05/2019 17:28

If it works for you then it doesn't really matter what she thinks. Personally I have two, one in the kitchen we use about 70% of the time and one in the lounge-diner we use the rest of the time. Depends on the layout of your house, I would find it irritating having to carry breakfast stuff through to a different room every morning.

See, this is the thing - 70% - 30% is pretty good, but I am pretty sure we would not bother using the dining table ever if we had a table in the kitchen... I see the convenience of having the table in the kitchen, but I much prefer to be able to walk away from the cooking mess and enjoy my meal... and leave DP to tidy up in the kitchen afterwards!

I should be used to this friend by now - she does have form for thinking her way is the 'right' way!

We just have a dining table in separate dining room but rarely use it

bingoitsadingo · 23/05/2019 12:43

depends on your house layout as to what works, surely

growing up we had both, because the dining room wasn't that close to the kitchen. But the kitchen table was smaller. So for breakfast, a quick meal, or if we weren't all eating, we'd use the kitchen for ease, then for bigger meals (sunday roast etc) and occasions we used the dining room. Dining room table was mostly used for crafts, homework, sorting paperwork, etc etc. If you have desks in bedrooms then you wouldn't need it for that and I can understand not wanting to clutter the kitchen

tbh I also like the kitchen table for people to sit at and chat whilst someones cooking.. though I guess any chair would suffice!

We didn't have a table at all until recently but then we are heathens Grin

blackteasplease · 23/05/2019 12:50

We have one table in a sort of dining room area which is attached to the kitchen. If I had a choice of kitchen table or dining table in a separate room I'd go for kitchen 100%

TruffleShuffles · 23/05/2019 12:52

I would only have a table in the kitchen if I didn’t have a separate room for a dining table. I’ve been lucky that our last two houses have been big enough to have an island we could sit and eat at though so I suppose I do have two separate eating areas. This like you mentioned though does mean we now rarely use the dining table that we ate at daily when we had a tiny kitchen which didn’t accommodate a table or island.

Cryalot2 · 23/05/2019 12:52

We have both .( I moved into dh family home) so many of things are here 50 years.
The kitchen table is in use daily and we use the dining room to eat on special occasions .,We used to entertain so very useful. But no longer and I use it for sewing.at times. The big dinning room table is great for eating round and more room for cutting out when sewing .
