If Krakow is worth a visit?

DorothyZbornak · 21/05/2019 16:33

DH has a significant birthday this year. He has warned me that under no circumstances am I to organise a surprise party with 100 people jumping out from behind the furniture Grin

That suits me fine. He's decided he'd like us to go away for a few days to somewhere we haven't been before, but a short enough flight, so he's been looking at Krakow.

So I'm just wondering if anyone has been before? Is it someplace that's worth visiting? Is there anything in particular that we should see or do there (it will just be the two of us) Any recommendations for food/drink etc?

His birthday's not until September, so we're probably looking at going sometime around the end of September/start of October.

3/4 nights. I did three and wished I’d done four though.

AnyFucker · 21/05/2019 17:41

Yes indeed

ZippyBungleandGeorge · 21/05/2019 17:42

We did five days four nights, got there really early in the day we arrived and left late in the evening of our last day, it was enough to not feel too rushed. I'm off to see if there's still some hazelnut soplica in the fridge.....

Outsomnia · 21/05/2019 17:44

@Greenfield19, please tell us more about this hotel. The location looks great, thanks!

Greenfield19 · 21/05/2019 17:47

Need I say more? £100ish a night and could not have been any more central.

View from my window. Oh take me back!!!

If Krakow is worth a visit?

I hope this doesn't come across as insensitive. I would like to visit Krakow but am apprehensive about Auschwitz. I know I should go but am worried it will be so awful it will tarnish the whole trip. And before anyone says it I know I am lucky to have the choice to go but also leave. As I said - this is not meant as insensitive, just my view. Has anyone been to Krakow and not visited Auschwitz? With hindsight do you wish you had?

Best city break we've ever done!

The architecture is stunning, fabulous food, lovely people
We had an amazing time

AdaColeman · 21/05/2019 18:06

How long to go for????
Three months at least! Grin Grin

Greenfield I can see one of my favourite restaurants in your photo! Even the window where they used to save me my favourite seat!!

Greenfield19 · 21/05/2019 18:06

Ahhhhh Grin

IcelandicYoghurt · 21/05/2019 18:15

Definitely go to the Jewish Quarter for great food and cocktails. There's a place called Hamsa with a laid-back/cool restaurant downstairs and a fancy cocktail bar above that I would definitely go back to if I could.

I loved Krakow, we went in Feb though so it was cold. I didn't go to Auschwitz though as the idea of the place makes me want to cry. The folk museum was brilliant, well worth the tram journey out there

Moralitym1n1 · 21/05/2019 18:41

There is also the Schindler museum, the Wawel castle, the tiny church in the main square holds a classical recital every evening, and (if you don't mind travelling for 90 mins) you can go on a day tour to see the highlands, very alpine, and on the way there some bits of the wooden architecture trail. Was only about 30 and we got prop!e carrier and guide to ourselves.

Moralitym1n1 · 21/05/2019 18:42

*people carrier.

(The main highland town is Zakopane).

theWarOnPeace · 21/05/2019 18:53

Love Krakow! The dumpling soups, the square, so many pretty things and beautiful architecture. The Schindler museum I feel was very well laid out, and although very moving, I found that I didn’t get upset. Reading the stories of actual people who lived it, looking at their things, all of it was so devastating and yet fascinating and mesmerising. We went in winter and the snow just added so much atmosphere, now I’m talking about it I want to go back!

Puzzledandpissedoff · 21/05/2019 19:07

Absolutely stunning city - I was there for the last week in January and the Christmas lights were still up, which just added to the joy

Agree with everyone else about the great sights and excellent (and very cheap) food and drink, but at the risk of sounding awful I'm afraid I found the Auschwitz tour a disappointment - not the place, obviously, but the tour itself. My group were rushed round by a frankly disinterested student, with little time to take anything in and absolutely no chance of pausing to reflect

Outside of the main season, I gather you can make your own way there and wander round in your own time. If that's available when you're there I'd strongly recommend it - and the extensive information boards mean you won't miss very much

crazycatgal · 21/05/2019 19:08

@Greenfield19 Do you mind sharing the name of the hotel? It looks lovely.

Cozytoesandtoast00 · 21/05/2019 19:10

Any racism there? I'm black...

SoleBizzz · 21/05/2019 19:11

Supposed to be fab and obviously Auschwitz is a must visit. I also hear the clothe shops are great and there is a Tesco!

SoleBizzz · 21/05/2019 19:12

NoCozy. My ex went and said it was so chilled.

Cozytoesandtoast00 · 21/05/2019 19:14

SoleBizzz Good! Would love to go 😁

Puzzledandpissedoff · 21/05/2019 19:14

A further point about Auschwitz ... you can only take a small handbag now, and I do mean small

Worth knowing when it comes to planning your day

Cozytoesandtoast00 · 21/05/2019 19:14

Wrong emoji!! 😁

Cozytoesandtoast00 · 21/05/2019 19:15

Ok I give up (smiley face)

Greenfield19 · 21/05/2019 19:15

It’s betmanowska main square residence. Absolutely recommend it’s. They’ll pick you up from the airport in a Rolls Royce if you want Grin

Just a warning you will see people taking Instagram shots at Auschwitz and it might make you blood boil a bit.
