To think that blackout curtains are a big lie

I've bought two pairs of blackout curtains recently for my baby's nursery to try to keep it as dark as possible and both are just normal curtains that let the light in. The first pair were from Ebay, so fair enough I will take the blame for buying cheap ones. Second pair, went to a high end shop, read all the reviews that said they are great and they are just as shite.

AIBU to think that they are a big con?

Use blackout blinds with blackout curtains, still not perfect but better than none. I’m with you OP

DS has the circus themed ones from Aldi and I recall they were only cheap, but work really well.

We have blackout blind and blackout curtains both from dunelm

Ikea blackout blinds were fab in our very bright flat....

We were regularly waking up at sunrise....stopped immediately

Much cheaper than elsewhere we looked we have large victorian windows with individual panes....we had 4 large windows. ..less than 80£ total

all my rooms have 2m drop lined velvet drapes, quite a heavy weight velvet, and they block the light, we used to have normal black out drapes, which seem to be a fabric with a weird plastic backing fused to the fabric, they are pretty shit, but the velvet is perfect, keeps the heat in and cold out in winter, and keeps the sun out and the cool air in, in summer, makes a huge difference to power bills

You need a cassette blind - brand name is blockout blinds. Brilliant invention.

needsleepzzz · 21/05/2019 14:42

Gro blind - brilliant and can be fit to different windows given the velcro, still using ours 3 years later :-)

Darkstar4855 · 21/05/2019 14:43

I got a gro anywhere blind for about £20 plus some sticky magnetic strips from amazon. Works a treat.

redcaryellowcar · 21/05/2019 14:49

We went for the double... eg black out blinds which fit the window quite closely, and black out curtains as well.

drspouse · 21/05/2019 15:18

Gro blinds really mean you have the room dark all day (or they are a faff to put up) plus they still leak light.

I got these cheap eBay ones and they work really well.

Summersunshine2 · 21/05/2019 16:15

Get blinds and curtains! They work better together.

Tfoot75 · 21/05/2019 16:23

We have blackout blinds and blackout curtains in the kids rooms. Still not totally dark, but as the back of the house faces south west, the sun is directly on the back windows at bedtime in summer, a little bit still comes around the edges, and quite a lot with only one of the two shut!

Waveysnail · 21/05/2019 16:28

Blinds and curtains. Only complete blackout is window cover with suction cups on it think it was by gro

Toddlerteaplease · 21/05/2019 16:29

I've got two pairs of blackout curtains on each of my bedroom windows. They absolutely do not work!
