To switch Wi-Fi off at 11pm

I have 2 children. One 18 year old and one 14 year old. My 14 year old is physically disabled and learning disabled.

My 18 year old plays on their Xbox when they're not at work. My issue is they are talking and shouting through the night to their friends on Xbox and it's keeping everyone else awake. This can go on til 3am at times and sometimes as late as 6am. Despite repeated requests to keep the noise down the shouting continues (the talking I could possibly live with)

It's having a negative impact on everyone especially my 14 year old who gets violent and argumentative when they are tired due to their disabilities and it is now impacting on their school work.

WIBU to switch the Wi-Fi off at 11pm so everyone can get a decent sleep?

Tell 18 year old next time he wakes you up, you are shutting off the wifi immediately, and from then on it goes off at 10. You don't care if he is in the middle of a game. Stop 'making requests'. Tell him either he keeps it down or he can move out and find his own place.

Then do it!

Agreed.

Absolutely! This is massive lack of respect!

My password controlled Hub Manager turns all Wifi for Xboxes and my boys' phones off between 11pm and 6am. Only I know the password.

Definitely turn it off!!!

My kids are of similar ages to yours (15 and 18). I always turn the Wi-Fi off to ensure they get a technology break and go to sleep. They do protest that "we are the only parents who turn the Wi-Fi off at night" etc lol but that's the rules in our house.

Actually, I think it is vital actually that it IS turned off at night - if we didn't my son would be up all night on his X-Box and daughter would be on her phone.

They do occasionally sneak down and turn it on .... but not too often.

I like this in principle but if he has a decent phone package he could just tether his xbox to this mobile data on his phone?

Teddybear45 · 21/05/2019 15:22

Honestly I’d get rid of the x-box - he’s 18 years old, he should realise by now how to be considerate at night. That he’s not is evidence he doesn’t deserve the x-box in the first place.

Thanks all. I've spoken to 18 year old and 14 year old spoke to them too while tempers aren't fraught so hopefully this will resolve the issue. If not then I'll be switching the Wi-Fi off after 10/11pm.

We’ve set the Wi-fi to go off at 9.30 for everyone but us.

Greenvalleymama · 21/05/2019 16:14

Yep definitely, it's not healthy for anyone to be staying up all night on the Xbox. Unless he's doing a night shift, then night time is for sleeping. He might technically be an adult but he's living in your house and under your rules. Switch the WiFi off, and tell him he doesn't have to sleep but he does have to be quiet at night time!!

I think its a great idea.
Saw a Sky broadband ad, about their new Pause function - annoyingly i just left Sky last month.
Ive tried to configure my router so it cuts off the kids at 9pm, but not joy yet, cant figure it out for TalkTalk, despite following various steps that are detailed on forums.
Go for it @OP

This sounds brilliant - do Virgin Media have this ?
