AIBU to ask why my nails are leaving the nail bed?

Before you ask, I've googled, and I don't have any of the causes.
In the past 6 months however, my nails are gradually leaving the nail bed. It's noticeable on two of my nails. Well others also, but symmetrically, but two are dips right down the nail.

What could be causing it? How can I stop it? What happens if the nails entirely lift?

Do you have a pic?

Spoon-shaped nails with the edges lifting off the nail bed can be a sign of anemia.

Your best bet would be to see your provider.

Trebla · 21/05/2019 03:15

Psoriasis, fungal infection, anemia.

Irulez · 21/05/2019 03:32

Have none of those.

See your doctor.

Changes to the nailbed absent injury often indicate one or more of many possible systemic issues.

Without photographs and/or a clearer, detailed desription (hand by hand, finger by finger, info re.symmetry/asymmetry of each hand, where it's lifting e.g. evenly across or on one side of the bed, the presence, direction, frequency and regularity of lines, ditches or pitting, colour of the bed etc.), we'd just be taking a complete and total shot in the dark.

...Even with that information, any suggestions would be broad at best without your medical history (e.g. Family/Personal Hx of auto-immune conditions, eczema, asthma, psoriasis, PA, RA, lupus, Crohns/UC, sensitivities/allergies etc.).

Will they go back onto the nail bed again?

No they won’t. Really sounds like nail psoriasis. Is there a chalky substance under your nails on the ones that are coming off?

Ask your GP for a dermatologist referral. I'm under consultant care for a skin disorder that's taken a while to diagnose and I lost count of the times they've checked my nail beds. Can be all sorts of things, many not obviously on Google.

Are you taking any medication? Nails lifting is one of the side effects from some prescription medication that my DM takes

Jamiefraserskilt · 23/05/2019 17:33

My toenail started doing this after I had my first and last gel and pedicure with that person. She was so rough. Never grown out. Same place has the corner lifted.

HappyGirl86 · 23/05/2019 17:34

I had this. It was awful. My doctor had no idea why it was happening.
I stopped using gel polish and I had to let them slowly grow out- it took ages but it really stressed me out!

Are your vitamin E levels normal? I had issues with my nails just flaking and being incredibly soft. Was given high dose vitamin E by GP and was fine within a couple of months.
