AIBU to think that the horror of preparing for a holiday is not worth it?

Don't get me wrong, I know I am very lucky to be able to go on a holiday over halfterm with dh, ds and dd. But I can't cope with the ironing of dh's many MANY shirts and the fact that I have just realised that the kids wear the same thing all the time (washed at night) and therefore don't have enough clothes for a week. I have also put on 2 stone and don't fit into any of the clothes I wore this time last year. The entire house is littered with clothes. I feel like everything is collapsing around me. And the kid's spaghetti has now been cooking for 20 minutes. Any advice? I'm meant to be excited but feel sense of looming catastrophe :(

Don’t iron his shirts.

Jebuschristchocolatebar · 20/05/2019 17:48

Why doesn’t your dh iron his own stuff. Problem solved there

PositiveVibez · 20/05/2019 17:52

Yep. Get your husband to iron his own shirts.

Order some clothes from George online for the kids. A few t-shirts, some shorts etc that will be worn after holidays are over.

Just turn the spaghetti off.

Mitzicoco · 20/05/2019 17:54

He works very hard all day. Last year I had a meltdown and he did the ironing but was really hoping to be able to do it this time. Something about ironing makes me feel slightly nauseous. (Kids supper now going cold) I know, because I have just eaten some of it. (Might explain the 2 stone weight gain....)

Sort the spaghetti out first, don't iron shirts either your DH can iron them himself or they can go unironed. Do a dash to a supermarket for clothes - someone suggested Asda which is great. Work your way through the house systematically to clear up clothing and either bin, put in washing, put away or make pile to go on holiday. Then pack.
It'll be worth it when you get there.

EmrysAtticus · 20/05/2019 17:57

Or just don't iron. Can't remember the last time I ironed. The planet still appears to be spinning.

Don't iron shirts
He does them or he drops them at cleaners for clean and iron .his choice.let him manage them
Go to supermarket buy cheap kids clothes

GreenTulips · 20/05/2019 18:00

Kids wear the same T-shirt and shorts when they aren’t in swimsuits - don’t over pack

Most places have a washing machine and sun loungers or benches outside for a sneaky book read whilst it’s on and dries in no time on holiday and definitely doesn’t need ironing!!

Add in a nice dress and smart shorts and evenings are sorted

Likethebattle · 20/05/2019 18:00

I don’t iron and certainly not it fits going in a case as it will be creased to duck by the time you unpack.

GertrudeCB · 20/05/2019 18:00

I hear you, I did the same for years BUT now I dont iron at all for holidays ( dh has always done his ironing himself) Look at the Marie Kondo folding technique, works amazingly for packingSmile

Mitzicoco · 20/05/2019 18:01

Those are good questions Gilbert1A. I suppose I am just trying to stay away form anywhere that has clothes in it (computer room).
Anyway, served up supper. Asda fab idea. Will go first thing. Thank you all :)

Tell him go and sort his own shirts unless he's been at work all day and you've had hours on your own.

Get off mumsnet Grin

Chances of me ironing anything before holiday? Zero.

Spaghetti? Drain, run cold water over it. Heat in sauce when you need it.

Clothes? Don't they live in swimming costumes? If not, just buy a few bits and don't worry if they wear them a couple of times. As long as everyone has fresh underwear.

I am a champion packer. Roll don't fold, or packing cubes. Make a list of everything you use as you use it everyday and on holiday. Then you have it next time.

InDubiousBattle · 20/05/2019 18:04

Are you going somewhere hot op? Asda has t-shirts for £2 each, buy a few of them. Write a list. Leave your dh to sort himself out.

Leelawadee · 20/05/2019 18:05

He works very hard all day

Yes, and it's obvious from your posts that you sit around doing nothing whatsoever. Grin

The OP is going on holiday, too -- surely her reading doesn't need to be 'sneaky'?

And it's your kids' issue if they want to rewear the same thing -- let them, just make it clear that you're not spending your holiday doing laundry, so they'll be wearing their favourite garments dirty from day 2 onward.

Likethebattle · 20/05/2019 18:05

I also used to overpack and now do two dresses for night, one trouser/top combo for night. You are only wearing it for a few hours 2-3 swimsuits, can be rinsed in sink and hung out overnight. 2 pair of trainers (worn to travel) 1 pair flip flops and one pair of nice going out sandals. 4 vest tops for daytime (again can be rinsed out and dried if needed) and 3 pairs of shorts. Toiletries wise I take 2 bars of dettol soap and a shampoo bar, light and take up no space. The shampoo bar can be used to wash clothes. That it done

Mitzicoco · 20/05/2019 18:07

Wise women of Mumsnet- thank you. I shall now go and (serenely) shriek at my children to finish their cold spaghetti. Hope you all have a lovely half term. Would do heart symbol but can't work out how to do it.

MarshaBradyo · 20/05/2019 18:11

I just got my stuff back and dh’s shirts so handy

newjobnerves · 20/05/2019 18:11
