Sorry for posting in AIBU. The Stop Smoking section is super quiet, and I posted on here for traffic. I used to smoke years ago, and quit 4 years ago. I started up again last year (very very stupid) and am now on about 5 a day and sneaking around behind my partner and family's back because none of them know I've started up again. I'm re-reading the Allen Carr book to quit. I'm sick of sneaking around, and I don't want to be a smoker. Anyone else with me? Just looking for some solidarity! (esp since I can't admit I'm "quitting" IRL since I haven't admitted I'm smoking iyswim)

That's it, I've done it. Last cigarette. And feeling quite thrilled. Now I need to just not get too cocky and remember why this is important.

I'm sorry about your diagnosis Bloke23. I would really recommend the book - it might change your perspective on wanting to give up and may help you get off the patches too.

and Thank you Watchingthetelly!!

Good luck to all the others: nc100 , ShutTheFridgeUp, Bravelurker

Well done. Keep going. I'm going to continue with the book later tonight

Well done you Philomena! I also remember feeling that elated and did for 2 and half years. Remember that feeling Smile.
I feel really positive about this now and read a bit more of the book whilst hula hooping Grin.

Cold turkey for 3 months now! So proud of myself! No cravings, and only 1.5 kg weight gain which was totally worth for quitting smoking.

Best of luck OP!

nc100 · 21/05/2019 07:26

Oh shit. I'd forgotten about the weight gain Shock I've a stone I desperately need OFF not on!!

I did similar to you and started smoking again years after stopping. It started with the occasional one but quickly became 10 a day. I tried to stop a few times in the next two years, but finally stopped after watching the Allen Carr stop smoking DVD, I haven't had a single one in the 19 months since watching.

PhilomenaCatLover · 21/05/2019 08:27

I still haven’t properly stopped - had a few drinks last night and had one after and again one this morning. :(

But have now thrown everything away. I need to just keep this feeling of how happy I will be as a non smoker.

Good luck to all of you! I quit on New Year’s Eve 2012 after a really bad throat and gum infection. After I’d had to stop for a week, I challenged myself to see how long I could go for.

I downloaded the NHS stop smoking app which kept a tally of days since I quit, and also gave interesting insight into how my health was changing with each passing day. There was no way I was going to reset to 0 again!

Also read Allan Carr and highly recommend - he made me feel like a twat for smoking 😂

BloodyDisgrace · 21/05/2019 11:13

I think you'll "stop" a few times before you stop for good. Good luck, you'll do it one day. I seem to have stopped after 8 years, this January. I lapsed once and bought mini cigars (I used to smoke menthol fags). Well, I finished them and didn't buy the new one.

Occasionally I remind myself that I'm very happy because I am no longer a smoker. And yes, I rad Allen Carr book.

EmeraldShamrock · 21/05/2019 11:21

If your reading Allen Carr for the first time, just on the feeling of power to give stop. I stopped and started, reading the book a 2nd time is never as effective.
