To ask if this is what flu feels like?

I've never had it but I would imagine this is what it feels like. I'm not sure if it warrants a trip to the GP. (Don't think I could even get myself there anyway)

Heads banging and my throat is so sore and feels as though it's about to close up. I feel very unsteady on my feet when I get up and it hurts to lift my head off the pillow.

I've also had the most terrible body aches since last night. It really feels like my bones are aching Sad i feel like I've been run over by a bus or trampled on by elephants.

I don't want to waste GPs time if there's nothing they can give me but DM says I should visit

I've never been to the doctor's for flu. Unless you're having problems breathing.

Take painkillers and drink a lot OP....it does sound like flu and it's not nice at all but the doctor can't really do much.

SCST01 · 20/05/2019 07:42

Did it come on quickly? Definitely sounds like a flu or flu-like virus. Paracetamol, ibuprofen, keep warm and have plenty of drinks. Don't think the doctor can do anything. Hope you're feeling better soon!

incogneto · 20/05/2019 07:43

@SCST01 yes it came on very quickly, literally last night out of nowhere. Didn't feel ill yesterday then it hit me in the evening Sad

nonevernotever · 20/05/2019 07:47

Yes it sounds like flu; no there's nothing the gp can do unless you have complications such as breathing trouble or vomiting so much with the fever that you can't keep the painkillers and fluids down.

BiggerBoat1 · 20/05/2019 07:47

If you can be bothered to type into Mumsnet its not flu.

Does sound nasty though. Plenty of fluids and back to bed. Flowers

Daffodils07 · 20/05/2019 07:49

Can you try and have a look at your tonsils? If there big red and swollen with white bits then it could be tonsillitis and may need antibiotics.
I've had flu and had all the symptoms you have described , also had tonsillitis with the same symptoms as well so could be either.
Take paracetamol and or ibuprofen, childrens worked better and was able to swallow them (ask pharmacist how much you can take because you can take more then the stated for children and there be able to tell you).
Hope you feel better soon.

Puffkin · 20/05/2019 07:51

GP can’t do anything for flu or viruses, regular paracetamol/ibuprofen, fluid and bed rest is your best remedy.
Get well soon.

OhYouBadBadKitten · 20/05/2019 07:51

With the very sore throat, I'm leaning more towards a strep infection or tonsillitis, both of which may benefit from antibiotics.

incogneto · 20/05/2019 07:53

Have no idea how I'm going to look after my baby DS 😭

OP posts:
LoafofSellotape · 20/05/2019 07:55

If you can be bothered to type into Mumsnet its not flu not true.

If it came on suddenly it's probably the flu OP,poor you. The aches and temperature are the worst . Make sure you drink loads

3in4years · 20/05/2019 07:55

Sounds like when I had flu. Not being able to lift my head for such pain led me ro out of hours. They gave me antibiotics for sinusitis and tonsillitis and told me to rest.

BethanyGilbert · 20/05/2019 07:55

Can your mum look after baby DS for the morning so you can get some rest?
I think it’s flu. Ignore people who claim unless you are dead it can’t be flu.

incogneto · 20/05/2019 07:57

My mum isn't that helpful. Basically told me to get on with it and visit GP

OP posts:
fedup21 · 20/05/2019 08:00

Yes, all people with flu are lying in bed in pools of their own wee as the flu stops you from being able to walk to the toilet as well.

Not.

No point in going to the GP unless you have something that needs antibiotics, I would think. Your mum doesn’t sound very supportive!

EugenesAxe · 20/05/2019 08:04

Yes it does - the aching is what really distinguishes it for me. You feel like you want to curl in bed and shiver. The NHS website has a list of symptoms.

I had flu this season and the awful throat without sneezing and runny nose was a prominent feature.

Take paracetamol/ibuprofen regularly and rest a day or two to break the back of it. Drink a lot. I wouldn’t go to GP at this stage; hope you improve soon.

Gatehouse77 · 20/05/2019 08:04

If the thought of getting out of bed to go to the loo is so awful that you make yourself go back to sleep rather than move...that's flu!
Everything aches in a way that is different to being physically knackered but has the same effect.

Keep up the fluids and don't bother about the GP unless you think you've got an infection - there's nothing the GP can do. They'll say fluids and rest.

Chippychipsforme · 20/05/2019 08:08

Sounds like flu. Stay in bed, painkillers, lots of water and ride it out - it's grim. There's nothing they can give you at the drs anyway so stay home. Do you have a partner who could take a day off to look after your LO?

AlphaJura · 20/05/2019 08:14

It does sound like it. Especially the aching. Do you have a fever? I've had flu twice. Once as a kid and they called the doctor out so I must've been bad and once around the millennium. It came on really quick, my boyfriend popped out from his flat we were at and I was fine. When he returned a couple of hours later I was really ill Came over really cold and shivery, went to bed and then was sweating. Couldn't eat anything. It went on for about 2 weeks really bad and about a week slightly better. Horrendous. I felt like I was dying. I did manage to get to the toilet when I needed it but it was hard. Hope you feel better soon op.Thanks

Mostly clicked on this thread to see the comments along the lines of "you can't have flu if you're not dead" and was not disappointed.

You can have flu and have no symptoms at all.

So yes, it's probably flu or another nasty virus, rather than the common cold.

Don't go to the GP, you'll only be spreading it further. However, if you experience breathing difficulties or your symptoms become severe you should seek medical attention.

Harebel · 20/05/2019 08:29

I agree with PP if it really is flu (and too many people mistake it for just feeling a bit shit) then you'd be too weak to leave house to see GP and even if you could be arsed to start a thread on MN (unlikely if proper flu) you'd hardly be responding in the way that you are.

81Byerley · 20/05/2019 08:30

Don't go to the GP. There may be someone there with a compromised immune system (think newborn, or chemotherapy patient). Phone the doctor and ask for a call back for advice. Advice probably will be paracetamol, plenty of fluids, and rest.

LoafofSellotape · 20/05/2019 08:32

I had flu in February, came on super fast, high temperature, the aches and was properly ill for 2 weeks ,I was still able to pick up my phone and use my thumb to type which takes zero effort!

The OP has already said she doesn't know how she's get herself to the GP's .

LoafofSellotape · 20/05/2019 08:33

**she'd

nelsonmuntzslingshot · 20/05/2019 08:36

It does sound like flu but even contemplating a visit to the GP would be too much. When I’ve had flu it’s all I could do to get up and use the toilet. The GP won’t be able to do anything anyway.

Lots of water, flat lemonade, paracetamol and ibuprofen. Feel better soon.

LoafofSellotape · 20/05/2019 08:38

I'm not sure if it warrants a trip to the GP. (Don't think I could even get myself there anyway)
