About the dog and the sausages.

Prepared to be told I am as I'm not really sure on this but here goes.
I've been ill today (d&v not self inflicted) when I ventured down the first time I made ds some sausages for breakfast, they smelt funny so I put them in a bin bag, double bagged it and put it outside my front door. Having another "bout" I then dashed upstairs and ended up falling asleep and forgot about them. When I came down again later I went to put them in the bin and discovered that a dog (I guessed) had ripped open the bag and pulled the sausages out. Ok, shouldn't have left them there so just cleared it up and thought no more. Until the dog's owner has just knocked on my door going absolutely mad saying I left them where the dog could get them and of the dog is ill I'm paying the vet's bill. Is he right? Do I owe him an apology and a potentially money.
I realise that I shouldn't have left the sausages there but on the other hand they were very much on my property, not out on the road, the dog was off the lead and would have had to run across my front garden to get them so I feel like the owner bears some responsibility for not controlling his dog? Am panicking as I know vets bills can be expensive and I just don't have that sort of money. What do you think?

This is crazy. I have a dog, if she picks up rubbish and eats it, I would only ever blame myself for not watching her carefully enough. The dog owner must just be having a mad moment!

SpockPaperScissorsLizardRock · 19/05/2019 19:35

If it was on your property then it's their fault. The dog should be under control and off your property.

Luciddreams · 19/05/2019 19:36

Yanbu, tell the dog owner to bugger off.

Damia · 19/05/2019 19:36

It stole your sausages. Totally owners fault

DogHairEverywhere · 19/05/2019 19:38

YA Absolutely Not BU! His dog should not have been on your property at all. It sounds like he was out there unsupervised for a period of time too, if the dog had time to rip into a bag. I would expect the man to be apologising to me for the mess the dog caused.

Cryalot2 · 19/05/2019 19:39

Hope you are feeling better op.
As a dog owner, tell him it is his place to keep his dog on a lead in a public place and under control.
Clearly he didn't so his fault.

MyNewBearTotoro · 19/05/2019 19:39

YANBU if you left them in a bin bag on your private property! That’s not an unreasonable place to put rubbish. I’d be questioning why the dog was allowed to enter your garden and why the neighbour didn’t have the dog under control. The neighbour was 100% to blame in this situation.

Furrydogmum · 19/05/2019 19:39

No you are not - dogs should be under their owner's control at all times, and particularly on someone else's property! I have dogs, I take responsibility for them! Don't panic and don't feel bad.

Soubriquet · 19/05/2019 19:39

Owners fault

rosydreams · 19/05/2019 19:40

i would be asking why was the dog on my property and it should not be left off lead if it does not heel

GreenTulips · 19/05/2019 19:40

My dog doesn’t steal food. It’s called training.

Totally his responsibility

Summerorjustmaybe · 19/05/2019 19:40

Threaten to sue for the cost of the sausages and trespass /carpets cleaned.
Cf!!

TheTrollFairy · 19/05/2019 19:43

I thought dogs had to be on a lead when in public (as in towns etc).
This is definitely the owners fault, the dog wasn’t controlled properly so was able to gain access to your private property.

Hope your feeling better soon

WhenISnappedAndFarted · 19/05/2019 19:44

Tell the dog owner that he owes you some sausages.

His dog came on your land and ate them. I assume he was off the lead. You don't owe him anything

PrayingandHoping · 19/05/2019 19:45

I'm a dog owner and no way is it your fault! If the dog came onto your private property its owners fault for not controlling his dog

And a few "off" sausages is not going to result in a vets bill! Give dog a few hours and he'll be right as rain! Unless he ate the plastic bag too! Still owners fault regardless

ZippyBungleandGeorge · 19/05/2019 19:45

Tell him there is also rat poison on your property, so he ought to keep a closer eye and lead on his dog

TheoriginalLEM · 19/05/2019 19:47

The sausages were probably fine anyway just smelt funny because you have grollies.

Owner totally responsible as his dog was not under control.

Him asking for you to pay the vet bill is as ridiculous as if you asked him to pay for the stolen sausages!

AdaColeman · 19/05/2019 19:50

It's clearly sausage theft, tell the dog owner that there is no meat to his claim, and that he cannot link you to the Vet's bill.

grumpyyetgorgeous · 19/05/2019 20:05

Phew thanks everybody, I can relax and not worry too much about a vet's bill then Grin

Once our ddog raided the flat upstairs - shared yard.
Ate a whole cooked chicken!
Blush

Likethebattle · 19/05/2019 21:57

The dog shouldn’t be digging through unknown rubbish. He should be a better own and train and have co trial of his animal. Tell him you’ll Counter sue for trespassing and alert the local dog warden that an untrained dog off the lead in public places.

SammySamSam09 · 19/05/2019 22:02

If they speak to you again tell them you will be reporting them to the dog warden for not having the dog on a lead and for letting the dog trespass onto your property unsupervised and steal from you.

Honeyroar · 19/05/2019 22:02

No, not your fault. What a cheeky dog owner! I'd have been apologising to you for my dog ripping your rubbish open. I'm sure the dog will be fine anyway.
