So my 4yr old has chicken pox and I have no idea what to expect I’m so frighten that he will get really sick. He already has a horrible fever. I’ve put calamine lotion on his spots but they haven’t blistered yet. He had two on his eyebrows that are crusted yellow, are these infected can somebody let me know ? He’s just recovered from a chest infection and is still on antibiotics. The Calpol isn’t bringing his fever down much it was 38.2 down to 37.9. He is fairly okay in him self, he’s drinking in small amounts and had a little bit to eat. I’m just worried about the fever. Can someone let me know their experience. Thanks

For me the worst days were days 3-6 but day 3 was the day the infected pox was discovered for us. As above fever usually breaks after 72hrs at most. When did your sons fever start op?

mariyah · 20/05/2019 19:45

So I went to the GP today which she said wasn’t infected but I am not convinced. I still think it’s infected. He’s had a high fever constantly since yesterday morning. As the other days he did have a fever but the highest it was going was 38 because of his chest infection but was coming down so quickly with Calpol and the Calpol would last hours so for the chest infection I was only giving Calpol and nerofen once a day. Since yesterday the Calpol won’t bring the fever down much at all. From 38.4 it will go to 37.9 or 38 and only last 4. Also it will take and hour for it to work. He’s complaing of being so cold when his temp hits 38.3. And wants to be wrapped up in a thin blanket. Also lacks energy when that happens. He’s got more spots today also bought poxclin using that instead of calamine. I don’t know how to upload a pic of the spots that worry me. I think we are on day three as I noticed the eyebrow spots on Saturday night.

Don’t worry about the fever alone - that’s not particularly high. My DD gets v high temps whenever she is poorly (up to 40.6) and even that didn’t worry a doctor on its own. Chicken pox spots do get yellow when blistering. Is area around it hot or red - that is sign of infection? But because he was already suffering from an infection, don’t be scared of calling 111 if you see any worrying signs.

None of the temps you have said are particularly high, if they hit 40 or above I tend to get concerned.
Everything you have said sounds like a really normal bog standard case of chicken pox.
It's just really rubbish Thanks
If he's itchy just do a luke warm bath with Oats, my daughter had very severe case last year aged 13 and she said it really helped.

troppibambini · 20/05/2019 20:17

They do go yellow and crusty when scabbing over.

My then 10 month old horrible yellow crusty ones on his eyebrows, not infected, just normal.

mariyah · 20/05/2019 20:28

Unfortunately it's not letting me post pics as I'm a new user. It's very very crust and all yellow. And red around it

It's so hard when they are young and ill, but chicken pox spots do go yellow and crusty with a red ring around them it's completely normal.
Can you see the pics I posted? They look horrible buts that's what chicken pox looks like.

mariyah · 20/05/2019 20:37

His is really hard dry yellow crust on top sticking out.

Sounds exactly like the ones my son had. It sounds completely normal for chicken pox, not sure what else you want people to say.

Nogodsnomasters · 20/05/2019 23:48

OK so he hasn't had the fever 48hrs quite yet so it may still last another day or so, it may go sooner, no1 can say for sure. Its normal when the fever peaks (calpol is starting to wear off) that he will become tired/quiet/clingy - that's how fevers make you feel. Has he not had many fevers in the last 4 years for you to deal with? The numbers he's presenting are not all that high.

I also suffer from health anxiety so this is not a judgement, just a question to make you try and look at the situation a little more rationally (we all know anxiety is irrational), if you don't believe the doctor then why did you bring him to see a doctor if you already think you know more/better than his/hers years of medical training? If you already knew the answer of "it's infected" then ask yourself why did you take him to the doctor at all.

I hope he has a good night's sleep for you.

mariyah · 21/05/2019 09:43

So I called 111 this morning they booked me an app. We saw the docs and it was an infection he's prescribed antibiotics.

troppibambini · 21/05/2019 11:48

Hmm okaaayyy Hmm
Well hopefully the antibiotics will kick in and he will feel better soon.

Nogodsnomasters · 21/05/2019 20:11

A different doctor than your own gp? So the doctor advised you to give him another antibiotic concurrent to his last one for the chest infection?
