To ask about these creepy M&S money-off coupons?

The scene: M&S West Hampstead self-service till this morning. There are two coupons lying there, same date, timed 2 minutes apart. Coupon 1: £5 off when you spend £50 in the food hall. Coupon 2: £5 off when you spend £35 in the food hall. They are otherwise identical. Which customer gets which offer? I didn't notice which one was mine. Does the machine scan your clothing to judge how poor you are and adjust the offer accordingly?

Probably based on the amount spent?

Cant see the creepy element tbh

GotThatSlightChewiness · 18/05/2019 15:15

I imagine the amount relates to how much you spend. Higher spend on shop, greater value of voucher?

Nolagerformethanks · 18/05/2019 15:16

Well I would imagine they are based on how much the customer has spent on what....?

beanaseireann · 18/05/2019 15:19

At least you get the money off.
In Ireland they dont honour the emails I get from M&S.
I was told the 20% off offer was for UK customers.
Irish customers have to pay the full price.

We got a £35 one today when buying the £10 pizza meal deal.

ArgyMargy · 18/05/2019 15:45

It's not creepy, it's marketing.

GrannyHaddock · 18/05/2019 15:54

Marketing is getting creepy then. Our spending constantly watched, differential offers to customers. I am used to the vouchers that offer deals on stuff you've previously bought, but this other is new to me. If you are a low spender do you get the £35 voucher because they think you're poor, or the £50 one to make you try harder?

If this is your idea of creepy i'm hoping you don't have ambitions as a screenwriter!

"It was an ordinary morning in West Hampstead....nothing could have prepared her for THIS...from the makers of Why Are Ant And Dec doing Self Service Voiceovers? And The 5 P Bag Charge FROM HELL..." Grin

GrannyHaddock · 18/05/2019 16:16

My spending habits will on President Xi Jinping's desk at this very moment, courtesy of Huawei.

Ant and Dec are annoying but still an improvement on that ghastly woman.

I'm surprised that this is news to you, it's nothing new.

In my experience you get lower spend offers to entice you in, and the minimum amount grows the more you shop there.

puppy23 · 18/05/2019 16:37

Sainsburys tend to do this too, giving you vouchers for money off/extra points if you spend X amount, and I've noticed X is usually around £10 more than you usually spend.

If you generally spend £25 in marks then you're probably unlikely to be bothered to spend £20 more for a fiver off, but you might spend £5 more - that's their thinking behind it

WifeOfCheater · 18/05/2019 17:04

I don't think anyone can call themselves poor if they shop at M&S

EssexGurl · 18/05/2019 17:15

I do the regular weekly shop at Sainsbury’s and often get a coupon for triple points on a £100 shop. I very rarely spend that, but often up to the £80 mark. They are encouraging me to spend more. It do snot work, I only buy what I need.

My DH only goes there for a top up shop at weekends, and spends about £10 a time. He gets triple point coupons for any value shop. Just marketing. They know what you are spending through your loyalty card and target you accordingly.

In M&S my Sparks offers are on women’s tops usually, as that is a regular buy for me.

Not creepy, just targeted. You could be like my Dad and refuse any loyalty card and only pay cash so rthey don’t know what you are spending. But then you don’t get any perks!

Actionhasmagic · 18/05/2019 17:16

Funny rufflecrow!!!

plunkplunkfizz · 18/05/2019 17:17

You’re right, our spending is being watched...by tills. Because it’s their bloody job.

About as creepy as a basket full of puppies.

LordProfFekkoThePenguinPhD · 18/05/2019 17:19

What gets me is the stupid voices on the self checkout. I don’t need a bloody comedian trying to entertain me.

(But if I was doing the voiceover I’d be yelling ‘lube and vodka? Fun night in ahead planned, eh?’)

PickAChew · 18/05/2019 17:20

The last 2 I've had from M&S have been when just buying sandwiches, so spending under a tenner. The first for 5 off 50 and today for 5 off 40.

GrannyHaddock · 18/05/2019 19:35

Next question: there is a barcode at the bottom of each coupon. If I tried to use the coupon that was not intended for me, would it work with my Sparks card? Mind you, something would be seriously wrong if I spent even £35 on food in M&S.

I saw the first few words of the title and thought you were going to say creepy M&S food ads where the men are grimacing and gurning over the special M&S food.

Now that really IS creepy, especially the bloke in the hat with the chicken rolls and the weird face pulling. It puts me off buying M&S food which I don't like much anyway.

Kabloom · 18/05/2019 20:34

You can use any voucher. Another customer gave me a voucher for kids clothes and it worked fine.

GrannyHaddock · 18/05/2019 20:54

M&S seem to try too hard with their food, "adding value" . I've put both the coupons in recycling. I'm far more likely to spend £60 in Sainsbury's than £35 let alone £50 in Marks.

OP posts:
SynchroSwimmer · 18/05/2019 21:20

Could it be a shareholders voucher...these might be different and are issued once per year?

Ariela · 18/05/2019 21:34

I get vouchers in shops for meat offers (never buy supermarket meat) etc. they've just trying to increase spend.
