AIBU to be livid at Clintons?

Popped into town today and got a few Disney bits as they had a sale on. The member of staff said she was pleased when someone bought it as they have been told all Disney merch will be going to the landfill on June 1st.

I was pretty horrified and asked couldnt it be donated to a charity shop or given to a childrens ward etc. She said no as Clintons didnt want to be sued if anyone injured themselves using something donated.

In this day and age where people are a lot more conscious and trying to be environmentally friendly AIBU to be pissed off at this from Clintons?

I have tweeted at them, not that I imagine it will do much...

I worked in a video game shop once, and when it closed, a lot of second-hand games had to be binned and destroyed. I offered to buy some of them, but apparently there was some tax-related reason why I couldn't.

I pinched a shit-load of it in the end.

So what can we, the public, do about this? How can we campaign to Disney/Clinton's to stop this waste.?? Any ideas?

Passthecherrycoke · 19/05/2019 07:59

The thing is though, what do you want to achieve? It’s going to end up in landfills anyway, that was it’s destiny from the day it was manufactured. Whether that happens next week or in 6/12/18 months when the new owner disposes of it, the result is the same isn’t it?

What can we, the public, do about this?

Buy less stuff. Repair, buy second hand, make your own.

Does anyone really need Disney "bits"? And it's not just Clintons, it's just about every shop there is. There's just too much plastic shit produced.

There's a big campaign starting now to encourage people to not buy new clothing for a year. If we are going to affect a change on the planet, we need to change our personal habits.

I know it will end up in landfill eventually, but perhaps someone could get some enjoyment from it first, now that it has been manufactured. I'm sure there must be some charity that collects unwanted toys and distributes them to children who don't have much, e.g. in women's refuges, etc

MelonSlice · 19/05/2019 08:26

You'll probably find that this is a licensing decision by Disney and not Clinton's choice.

Bigorangenecklace · 19/05/2019 08:39

But it's not just Disney. On this thread alone we have seen examples of teddies having their feet cut off, expensive perfumes binned and God knows what else.

Perhaps we need some legislation to prevent all this waste. To change laws on product licences so large companies like Disney can't impose this type of clause.Or to make shops pay so much to send their waste to land fill that they think again about the commercial decision to do so

Regarding food, you can encourage any businesses you know of to get involved with (for example) Too Good to Go (toogoodtogo.co.uk/en-gb)

Thanks for highlighting this.

Very upsetting

At least give people the chance to use the stuff rather than binning it.

Perhaps we all need to stop buying the stuff.
