Currently suffering from anxiety and can get to sleep fine but wake up 2 hours later crippled with fear and can't nod off again.

I've tried Nytol and Kalms Night and they're useless.

Are there any other non prescription sleep aids anyone would recommend?

Thanks in advance x

Took 1 purple box nytol last night, it worked pretty well, woke up 2 or 3 times during night but dropped off again almost instantly and feel better this morning, no hangover type feeling at all.
Thanks everyone for the input.

I tried taking Valerian Root last night to help me sleep and it worked like a charm!

Valerian Root was recommended to me by a colleague in Colorado when I was discussing melatonin with him for jetlag (I used to travel from London to Denver a lot on business) but I'd never got round to trying it until now. I was exhausted yesterday (after a sleepless night the previous night) and desperate for sleep so thought I'd give the Valerian Root a whirl but didn't have high hopes. Wow! It was the first night in ages that I slept right through until my alarm. I'm going to take it again tonight and hope for the same result.

I took one 425mg capsule. Although the bottle recommended taking 5 of them!!!

@lovestonap

These. I haven't had a night's insomnia since. I only take occasionally, and one or two help me drift off with no problems. Has really taken the stress out of my sleep life.

I am about to buy these as I read that good for sleep maintenance. I have absolutely no problem falling asleep. I sleep in nano seconds. However I’m early waker.

But I am curious, do you take infrequently because insomnia only hits you every now and then? Or do the pills actually start to improve your sleep overall hence only need to take infrequently?

Melatonin- great excuse to get over to US if you can otherwise online

Nytol blue one is amazing but not recommended long term or every day- I find it powerful leaving me groggy the next day and even struggling to wake up! It’s better than melatonin in my opinion.

This is however combined with hardcore workout sessions (weights) at the gym. I find muscle aches really help with sleep.

Another vote for melatonin. Easily bought OTC if you know anyone going to the US but otherwise you can legally buy it online. It does give some people very vivid, crazy dreams.

Melatonin great for falling asleep but not for night wakings

Does Phenergan leave you feeling very bad the next day? Dr a better nights sleep, but have to be ok for work too.

You can buy melatonin over the counter here in France now if anyone is heading over on holiday - it's available in some supermarkets as well as pharmacies. Only 1 or 2 mg I think but that's often enough.

How much valerian do people take? I'm confused by the dosage as there seem to sometimes be 2 amounts per pill on the bottle - actual dosage and equivalent dry weight. So it can be hard to compare products!

I am on beta blockers too. Commiserations to those who find they keep them awake... I never knew that could happen! I've had my dose doubled because I've developed at tremor as well as high blood pressure ((which is why I took them originally) but they make me so tired in the day and I feel like I'm physically and mentally wading through treacle! Sorry have rambled off topic a bit. They do help me sleep as well.
