And they should have?

A lot of Shakespeare isn't far off that either @WineIsMyCarb Grin

Actually, Pillow Talk etc have a Shakespearean kind of vibe about them Smile

Is Man Who KTM the recommendation? I'm looking for a Gateway Drug for DD films. DH and I like to find a film theme and make our own movie season.

TMWKTM could be a good Doris Day/Hitchcock crossover film.

I really like the Stanley Shapiro films. (Lover Come Back, Pillow Talk, Touch of Mink). I believe they were her biggest successes.

Pillow Talk is lovely fluffy fun. Shakespearean it ain't.

HeronLanyon · 16/05/2019 23:22

Whip crack away !

Oh I think in the "romantic misunderstandings" sense, there are some similarities.

I love the one she's in with Frank Sinatra

RubberTreePlant · 16/05/2019 23:25

Actually, looking at that list @WineIsMyCarb , you're overdue a Hitchcock season Smile

I totally agree. Her films were lovely lighthearted fun, although she did make a few serious ones like Julie and Midnight Lace. Finger crossed we might get one or two shown over the weekend. I love her films, she was a very talented, kind beautiful woman with a lot of class, and a huge heart for animals.

PrivateIsles · 16/05/2019 23:26

Wine The Man Who Knew Too Much is a Hitchcock film, and it's excellent but I do love James Stewart also.

The Thrill of it All is meant to be good but I haven't see it so can't really say! It sounds intriguing though
IMDb link

The first review in the link describes it as "An Un-dated Romantic Comedy" Grin

CoolCarrie · 16/05/2019 23:27

Young At Heart is the one with Frank Sinatra.

CoolCarrie · 16/05/2019 23:30

The Thrill Of It is very funny and has the very handsome James Garner in it.

SummerPlace · 16/05/2019 23:30

Don't live in the UK, but I have to say I loved Doris Day. She just glowed - radiant skin, sparkling eyes, whiter than white teeth with a smile that I'm sure would light up a room. Great figure and legs. She should have been an advert for some sort of healthy lifestyle/vitamins because she just exuded vitality and well-being.

Plus she had talent. Great singer, very, very good dancer, reasonably good actress with a lovely deft touch for comedy. Went so well with so many different types of leading men. And during the 50s and 60s, she certainly had her pick of the best.

To use the old cliché: she was the whole package.

RubberTreePlant · 16/05/2019 23:31

Young At Heart is the one with Frank Sinatra.

I haven't seen that one. That's young Frank, isn't it? I'd love to see that.

The Thrill Of It All or a Pillow Talk would be lovely. What a class act she was.

Mythreefavouritethings · 16/05/2019 23:33

Not ‘a’ Pillow Talk, obviously, no idea where that came from...

WineIsMyCarb · 16/05/2019 23:33

Is James Stewart the Chap from It's a Wonderful Life?

Ok will go for a Hitchcock season. I've seen Birds, many many years ago.

Thanks for the recommendations!

PrivateIsles · 16/05/2019 23:35

Wine yes that's him! Ooh what about a James Stewart season as well - I love your idea of themed movie watching, I might try it Smile

SummerPlace · 16/05/2019 23:37

@PrivateIsles "The Thrill of it All" co-starred James Garner when he was being pushed as a film star. They worked so well together as a pairing that they immediately made "Move over, Darling" which was a re-make of an old Cary Grant/Irene Dunne movie.

I haven't seen either film for years, but I loved them both.

flowery · 16/05/2019 23:42

DH and I got together when we were in the orchestra for our school production of Calamity Jane. Secret Love is therefore our song.

PrivateIsles · 16/05/2019 23:43

Thanks Summer - am going to add that to my list of films to watch!

flowery · 16/05/2019 23:44

“Nooooow I shout it from the hiiiiighest hill”

Reasonstobeearful · 16/05/2019 23:45

I want to see Young At Heart after watching that documentary about her the other night.

Agree that the Pillow Talk trio was great. I loved the moonlight bay ones when I was a wee girl and it would be great to see them again.

My favourite is love me or leave me.

Reasonstobeearful · 16/05/2019 23:45

And calam ofc.

MarieIVanArkleStinks · 16/05/2019 23:52

Film Four are. They announced:

In tribute to the late Doris Day, we are screening three beloved classics on Tuesday 28th May: 11am - Midnight Lace 1.10pm - Pillow Talk 3.15pm - The Man Who Knew Too Much

She was the greatest; my favourite actress bar none despite the fact that none of her films were screened during my lifetime. And oh, that voice. They don't make them like that any more.

tobee · 16/05/2019 23:53

We did Calamity Jane at our school too, flowery. There was a lot of real snogging going on on the stage! 😱 not me I was back stage on not snogging

I quite like Doris Day and her films, but she was a bit too wholesome; I didn't really dream to be like her. But I'm sad she's gone.

Midnight Lace scared the crap out of me when I was little.

Love old films!
