...to wonder why there’s so much bloody dust?!

Why does my bedroom have so much dust?

I live in a c. 1800’s listed building that was renovated and re-plastered from scratch about four years ago. For all intents and purposes the bedroom looks like a room in a new build. I have a new wooden window frame which closes tight, I am on a busy high street, but not a main road.

This room just seems to generate so much dust in comparison to the rest of my apartment and i’ve no idea why. One wall in my living room is entirely exposed stone and doesn’t have anywhere near this much dust.

I hoover relentlessly, I dry wipe the surfaces, I change bedding every 1-2 weeks, but still nothing seems to help. I did a good clean the other week, went away for five days, and when I returned there was a visible coating of dust on my drawers and bedside tables. I have a book case with handbags neatly stored in it, there’s an inch of dust on some of those despite being regularly brought out and brushed down.

Does anyone have any suggestions? My dp suggested a hepa air purifier thing? Do they work?

Gross Warning Is it dead skin? I am always horrified when I vacuum the mattress at how much comes out.

QueenofPain · 16/05/2019 14:48

@kilash Well maybe? I guess... I have a tempur mattress, so not sure I could hoover much out of that, but i’ll give it a go.

There is no point in dry wiping dust, you're just moving it around then. Changing your bedding is making 1-2 weeks worth of shed skin fly into the air and then settle on everything.

gamerchick · 16/05/2019 14:56

You need to damp dust to actually pick it up, reduce clutter so it can be done quicker.

skippy67 · 16/05/2019 15:01

I never dry dust. Always damp dust.

Fiveredbricks · 16/05/2019 15:04

Damp dust and repaint if you have to. Could be the ceiling wasn't pva sealed properly after plastering and is just crumbling paint dust constantly?

Lilifer · 16/05/2019 15:06

OP I have exactly the same problem as you in my bedroom and it drives me nuts. I could walk in to the room an hour after cleaning it and find a small layer of dust has settled already!

Hotterthanahotthing · 16/05/2019 15:10

My bedrooms the same but I just assume its skin.I have Venetian blinds around the house but only have to dust the bedroom one regularly.

Debfronut · 16/05/2019 15:20

Do you have mould anywhere? That produces dust i think?

QueenofPain · 16/05/2019 15:39

@debfronut I don’t think there’s any mould, this place is dry as a bone due to all the insulation and stuff, the air is like a desert. I don’t think mould would stand a chance.

Presuming you keep your clothes in your bedroom, my theory is it’s off the clothes.

MRex · 16/05/2019 16:14

I used to get awful dust when I lived near a busy road. I moved and didn't get it any more. I suppose it could have been from something else, but the ceiling wasn't visibly crumbling and all my stuff was the same.
