Situational Anxiety

I don't suppose it's really AIBU but I'm hoping for traffic.

I'm going through a horrible work related situation just now. I've been off this week and am going to the doctor today for a certificate to get signed off. Being away from work has made things slightly easier but I'm crippled with anxiety and paranoia. Everything else in my life is great, lovely dh and dc, fantastic pals and whilst not loaded we're financially stable.
The doctor gave me propananol 10mg last time but they're pretty useless. As this anxiety is specific to a situation that hopefully once resolved I will feel better AIBU to ask doctor for something like sertraline to see me through it?
I'm really struggling, can hardly eat anything and need something to help.
Any advice welcome thanks.

Anyone?

I would go to the GP with an open mind and see what they say.

You've mentioned 'last time' which would be a clue that it's not necessarily a situational thing but perhaps an ongoing issue! So try and keep an open mind, because if you go with a set idea (I have this, I need these meds) and you don't get them you will be disappointed.

Hope the appointment goes well for you, OP.

Thanks for replying, by last time I meant when this situation started about 4 weeks ago, they haven't really helped much.

Certainly worth telling the GP that they (meds) haven't really helped then, in that case! Is there an end date in sight for the situation, by any chance?

Pgqio · 16/05/2019 10:31

It's a Disciplinary situation and it's dragging on because I work for a council department and everything is at a snails pace. The union have been great trying to chase everything up but there's no specific end date.
Thanks for your advice.

Heck yes, they can take so much longer than you think! Hope it resolves soon.

Thanks off to doctor now

Anxiety is horrible. I suffer with chronic anxiety so do understand how you're feeling. Hope the doctor is some help but just wanted to say that you can self refer to nhs for help with this kind of thing. You'll get a response for an ininitial assesssment within 3-5 working days. Hope you feel better soon

DulcieRay · 16/05/2019 11:08

Sertraline doesn't work like that
You need something fast acting like a benzodiazepine but they don't like to prescribe them

CatSmize · 16/05/2019 11:09

How did it go, OP? Bear in mind that Sertraline takes a while to start working and, the side effects over the first 2-4 weeks include increased anxiety.

Pgqio · 16/05/2019 12:02

Thanks everyone. Doctor was lovely, line for 2 weeks and higher propanol dose. He agreed with pp that ssri not right for current situation.
