To not care about celeb personal beliefs to enjoy their work?

Just that. Read a twitter thread today about someone hating Kristen Bell because of her alleged famewhore tendencies, and therefore they won't watch The Good Place. Why though? If I have to like every single actor on a show I'd never get to watch anything!

Why have things changed so regarding entertainers? As long as they're doing they're jobs, why should anyone give a fuck about their political beliefs or personal choices?

Don't whatever you do mention Jeremy Clarkson, Boy George or Ant McPartlin. Shock

flirtygirl · 15/05/2019 15:47

Does the same apply to Roman Polanski and Woody Allen? Do you watch and enjoy their work even though they are paedophiles??? And one is a convicted rapist??

HBStowe · 15/05/2019 15:54

I can’t believe Kristen Bell of all people is being accused of ‘famewhoring’ (Hmm) when she seems like a genuinely decent person.

That aside, I don’t explicitly support artists who have raped or sexually assaulted others. But I recognise that it’s complicated. I love the work of T S Eliot, who was an anti-Semite. I love Beyoncé even though she has worked with known abusers. It’s not an easy line to draw, and I leave it to individuals to decide where their boundaries are.

NoineNoine · 15/05/2019 15:55

Of course not, but then again Paedophilia is a not a belief!

I would never listen to Micheal Jackson's music, but that is because he's nothing more than an unconvinced felon and supporting his music actively hurts his victims, but I am perfectly free to watch Gweneth Paltrow's movies though I think she's a pretentious twat.

“Famewhore”?

That doesn’t sound like a belief! Sounds like a sexist insult.

Sux2buthen · 15/05/2019 15:58

Kristen bell seems nice 🤷🏻‍♀️
Chill out @flirtygirl, op didn't say anything even remotely like that😂. That went from 0-100 really quickly

LindsayDenton · 15/05/2019 15:58

I enjoy Tom cruise films, even though I don’t support his religious choices.

TheTitOfTheIceberg · 15/05/2019 16:02

My personal creed on this is, do I mind if this person profits in some way from me watching / listening to / reading their work? So in the case of someone who is dead and whose beliefs were perhaps 'of their time' (like Eliot, as mentioned above), I won't let it spoil my enjoyment of their output. Where someone has been convicted of or is 99% certain to have been guilty of a serious crime, especially a crime against vulnerable people - so rapists, paedophiles, people like Jimmy Savile etc - and especially where their victims are likely to still be alive and therefore to suffer further if their abuser continues to be lauded and celebrated, then I refuse to watch / listen / read.

NoineNoine · 15/05/2019 16:03

By the way, just to clarify I don't think Kristen Bell is a famewhore. It was a random on twitter who said that, but it got me thinking. I don't approve of Emma Thompson's rather silly and hypocritical views on the environment. I love her as an actress.

No other job seems to be like this. I don't know who my doctor or hairdresser votes for. What they think about immigration or gun laws. As long as they do their job it is enough, but the moment its a celeb everyone on the Internet wants to know everything about them, and yes they may not be perfect but should it affect their professional careers?

I don't think it is unreasonable to divorce the output from the person. Isuppose it comes down to how good at compartmentalising you are.

Things might be different though if their work, and your consuming of it, was to directly benefit something harmful. Like a song that itself has anti-semitic lyrics.

flirtygirl · 15/05/2019 16:44

The point I was making was some beliefs and actions by some performers cross the line.

Everyone has their line and their reasons in choosing their choice of entertainment but it's not as simple as saying why should anyone give a fuck about their political beliefs or personal choices?
