to think this is never going to end and we shouldn’t have to pay for these trees

My MIL is always sending off for things from the back off the Sunday supplements. Recently she sent off for a set of 3 fruit trees for us, ideal for growing in pots on a patio apparently. How lovely, very kind.

The trees turned up about a month ago. We buy pots and compost, plant them and get on with our lives. The following week a letter arrives from the plant company. They couldn’t accept MIL’s cheque because she had made an amendment to something or other on the cheque.
We phone them up, ask to pay by card but nope that’s not possible. We send them a cheque with details both in letter and on the back of the cheque explaining the problem.

A week or so later another set of 3 fruit trees turn up. I phone them to explain the problem, again they won’t accept card. MIL is staying at the time, and says she’ll have them as our trees look so nice and sends off a cheque the second she gets home - again explaining the problem.

This morning another set of bloody fruit trees arrive. I phone them up, they can’t accept returns of live plants, they want a cheque.

AIBU to think I am now forever stuck in a loop of receiving fruit trees? Should I just stick them on Freecycle and never give it a second thought? Do I have to send yet another cheque? Am I being haunted by cut price trees?

I think this company needs to carry out a root and branch investigation into their ordering system. The low hanging fruit would be to review their delivery service.

Oh, @OVAgroundWOMBlingfree, if the company has said they don't collect lice trees, just say that if they're happy, you won't water them and the can collect the dead trees instead! Wink

RevealTheLegend · 15/05/2019 20:43

Dont worry if they get threatening

Their bark is worse than their bite.

MsMightyTitanAndHerTroubadours · 15/05/2019 21:07

I am sure you'll be glad when this is all over and you can turn over a new leaf.

Dizzywizz · 15/05/2019 21:16

@NannyRed am I missing something here, what limbless artists??!!

thesnapandfartisinfallible · 15/05/2019 21:19

Well OP hopefully your letter is successful and your efforts to have these trees collected will bear fruit.

NannyRed · 15/05/2019 21:21

@Dizzywizz. Some years ago, I kept receiving Christmas cards painted by artists using their feet or their mouth. Stunning artwork but a proper guilt trip. They would arrive, unordered and unwanted with a polite note asking me to pay or return the cards. I never had the time to visit my post office to return them. I think they counted on that,

Kedgeree · 15/05/2019 21:29

I do not accept returns. Or complaints. Only money.
Hilarious. 😂

Petalflowers · 15/05/2019 21:31

Lumberjack song

Suddenly got The Lumberjack song in my mind!

CatchyUsername · 15/05/2019 21:35

Well done OP for telling them you’re sycamore trees. Once they twig you’re not such a sap, you probably won’t be so poplar.

RosaWaiting · 15/05/2019 21:39

Catchy I think you might have won thread....sycamore Grin

RosaWaiting · 15/05/2019 21:42

@NannyRed

OMD, did you pay?! I totally didn't. I never asked for the ruddy things.

so I just put them in the recycling. Hopefully after 2 years they won't send them again, I don't know.

TixieLix · 15/05/2019 21:44

The OP is be-cider herself and in des-pear because she's received more trees.

OP tell them you don't have a cheque book and ask if they accept Apple Pay.

PeanutButterCheesecake · 15/05/2019 21:49

Wish someone would send me some bloody free trees, they're expensive! Barking they are.

LunchBoxPolice · 15/05/2019 22:01

You wood think they'd axe before sending even more, these idiots must have had a lobotony.

YesQueen · 15/05/2019 22:14

I'm crying at this whole thread and the cat has run off sulking at my howling Grin

OVAgroundWOMBlingfree · 15/05/2019 23:13

I’m creased up laughing at my own thread.
I was a weeping willow and utterly stumped before I posted.

How do you feel now op? Like branching out with your new mn friends??

MiniMum97 · 16/05/2019 00:12

It's not a "return". They are unsolicited goods. They either collect them or don't collect them either way you don't need to pay for them.

I would make sure I had put in writing to them that they have sent unsolicited goods and that they need to collect by x date or you will dispose of them, send it recorded delivery and keep a copy and proof of delivery.

Then freecycle the trees or give them away.

Stop sending them cheques.

MrsMoastyToasty · 16/05/2019 00:17

If I was yew, I wood make it plane that yew are sycamore trees being delivered and yew will be going to trading standards. You won't be poplar with them.

Shodan · 16/05/2019 00:31

if the company has said they don't collect lice trees

I'm not surprised, no-one wood want a lice tree. Nit the done thing at all!

Good luck with the letter OP, hopefully it'll make the company cedar error of their ways.

Bozlem80 · 16/05/2019 18:03

Have they sent the cheques back or has the money gone out of MIL account? Think they maybe taking the piss if not sent cheques back & demanding more money & who doesn’t accept card payments nowadays? Very odd Confused

SignOnTheWindow · 16/05/2019 18:09

@MrsMoastyToasty and @Shodan Outstanding!

VampireSlayer19 · 16/05/2019 18:17

This is crazy

sleepmcsleepysleepsleep · 16/05/2019 18:24

I feel your pain and would find the whole thing a nightmare if it was happening to me, but from the outside looking in, this is one of the funniest things I have read in a long time.
Really hope you get it sorted though!

ToftyAC · 16/05/2019 18:26

Who on Earth doesn’t accept card payments - even if only through PayPal? Sounds proper dodgy.
