Aibu to think school uniform (Logod) is just ridiculously expensive!

For example, average cost of a primary uniform is £160. Local high school cost my friend £300 for one child. My son's grammar school cost me £350. My son's state nursery cost me £50.

It's pricing poorer families out of uniform and into being bullied? How do you keep the costs down?

All these uniform changes so much ending up ragged or in land fill. How much do the blazers cost?

It’s just bizarre how different it can be. Our academy primary in a fairly middle class part of the SE has only got logos on jumpers, PE T-shirts and PE hoodies. And has a roaring trade in 2nd hand items (£1 a jumper and they wash well!). So I’m in the camp that it’s cheaper than DSs wardrobe would otherwise be.

MunchMunch · 20/05/2019 13:17

The blazers are £33 each.
I really don't think they'll change the uniform but it was mentioned on a letter about things that would be covered more in a meeting. I know fine well there would be uproar if they changed again as I'd say a majority of the kids have the new uniform which no doubt the parents would like to last quite a while.

I've actually just emailed the juniors we're transferring to in order to check there are no plans for optional logo uniform to become compulsory for next year before I start stocking up gradually on bits!

Jimdandy · 20/05/2019 20:13

I don’t think £160 for 5 days worth of clothes that can be worn 38 weeks of the year bad value.

TeacupDrama · 20/05/2019 20:40

it is not that the basics cost that much 2 pairs of school trousers are as cheap if not cheaper than jeans or whatever they would wear if not in uniform
I guess is no uniform most primary kids would be in jeans or leggings or skirts t shirts hoodies and trainers maybe dresses or shorts in the summer or denim skirts , school uniform from a supermarket is not more expensive than these; but logo t shirts are more than normal t shirts, logo sweatshirts are more than asda sweatshirts but cheaper than superdry or hollister
I think any changes must only start in August/September with 6 months notice and there must be at least 12 months overlap so notice given of exact uniform changes in March 2019 would apply to new Pupils from September 2019 and others only from September 2020 at the earliest ( with more time for one off purchases in a school career like blazers but could have a new badge to sew on and expensive PE kit) no further changes allowed for at least 6-10 years

Its terrible value. It cant be worn anywhere else. So they get through 2 sets of clothes each day ( more washing for us yay Hmm ) and you dont get the wear out the clothes you have bought.

Plus pe kits get left at school. So for 2 children I have to buy trainers for pe. Then trainers first home. And school shoes. That's 6 pairs of shoes every time they grow. That's note than 160 quid on it's own.

I'd rather have one pair of trainers that get battered and well worn than 4 pairs that I haven't got the money's worth out of.

Abbazed · 21/05/2019 07:47

£33 that's four cheaper than mine. It's annoying because the quality is dire. I worked at marks. I know decent clothes. The blazer my son have is worth a tenner no more. I get the lack of wear of four pairs of trainers so frustrating

My primary age child's uniform is fantastic value. A logoed sweatshirt costs about £10 and a waterproof coat about £20. We can only buy directly from the school. Parents complain bitterly about it so a local shop started making fake versions of the uniform which are much poorer quality and still cost the same. Somehow people think this is a victory Confused

My secondary aged child's uniform cost hundreds, particularly the sports kit which is all Canterbury brand and embroidered with the child's initials. Even the sports bag cost over £40.

Nothing that is 100 % polyester should ever cost 30 + quid.

It's like paying a tenner for Tesco value bread

Bugsymalonemumof2 · 21/05/2019 08:12

I have just bought uniform for my 4 year old who starts in September

3x logo sweat cardis £32

1x logo pe jumper £9
1× logo bookbag £6
6 x supermarket polos £6
Supermarket pe top £2
Supermarket pe shorts £4
2x Pinafores £8
2x skirts £8

Not too bad and they look smart for it

TeacupDrama · 21/05/2019 17:12

2 x logo cardigans @£10 = £20
2 x grey school skirts ASDA = £8
3 x white shirts Marks =£12 ( could get cheaper) she has 2 from this year
supermarket PE t shirt £3
PE shorts £3
2 pairs black leggings =£10
1 pair black plimsolls they wear them as indoor shoes £10
total £64
last years coat will fit next year but as they don't need a specific coat she will wear same winter coat everywhere likewise shoes/ boots/trainers
this years school bag will be fine next year too but there are no rules re bags either
The cardigans should do the next 2/3 years

PantsyMcPantsface · 21/05/2019 18:42

My kids cardigans get so wrecked with whiteboard pen they never last - bloody red uniform shows the stains and fades if you go too hard on the stain removal. I only ever seem to get the year out and even then they look awful by this point (so do all the class though at least)!

Abbazed · 24/05/2019 20:35

@SarahTancredi I 100 pc agree but he'd get behaviour points for not wearing it. 3 behaviour pts is a detention. Didn't want him in wrong shade one. The logo isn't even embroidered it's glued on! Grr...tat. Vile cheap tat!
@Bugsy have you had a child in reception before? Those tops will be annihilated...kids get the weirdest stains...
@teacup 2 years lasting cardis...are you on glue? Angelic child? Overly optimistic?
