I keep having the coil recommended as the best contraception option for me.
I've heard a few negative stories but I know you always hear more of the bad. For a more balanced view can anyone tell me their experiences good or bad please?

I had the mirena coil fitted about 6 weeks ago as it was recommended to help with my really heavy periods. It took 3 attempts for the Dr to get the coil inserted properly and the cramping and pain was awful. I've bled every day that it's been in and it's a bit more than just spotting. If it doesn't settle down in the next month or so I'm going to get it removed.

iolaus · 14/05/2019 22:44

I had a mirena, insertion was absolutely fine - was chatting through it. After about a year I started spotting all the time (had nothign up till then) and after a few months I wanted it out - they couldn't find it, so a doctor apparently dilated my cervix and went the length of my uterus and couldn't find it - the pain was horrendous

When I then got referred to a different hospital they eventually found it - in my abdomen - I think the doctor pushed it through when I had the really bad pain rather than at insertion

I'll be honest though the pain wasn't that bad at the time in between just the odd twinge - the doctors were very surprised I wasn't in agony (was in surgery two days after it being discovered)

Apparently it's rare 1 in 10,000 cases for it to perforate the uterus - was told never to have one again

Having it inserted is only unpleasant for a few minutes and is definitely worth it in the long term. Plus my sex drive has increased massively since swapping from the pill to copper coil Smile

rideawhiteswan · 14/05/2019 22:47

I was fine with mine, not bad to put in, normal periods all great except I got pregnant!!!

ScruffGin · 14/05/2019 22:47

Uncomfortable insertion, first two, the one after having a baby was a doddle!
Definitely worth it, still have periods but very light, easy contraception, don't have to remember anything (pills etc)
Would definitely recommend!

FarTooMuchWashing · 14/05/2019 22:53

I had the mirena. Insertion was fine although far from pleasant. However, I then had chronic thrush and ended up with weekly appointments at the sexual health clinic (with my toddler and all the teenagers Blush).
It finally cleared up once I had the mirena removed and I abandoned birth control for a year or so. I’ve not had thrush since (and had only had it twice prior to getting the coil) - DD2 is nearly 12.

HoustonBess · 14/05/2019 22:55

Ask how experienced the person inserting it is. GPS often have a go, it'll hurt less if done by someone at a clinic who does it often.

I've had copper and mirena, copper when childless. Hurt going in, periods went from light to v heavy and crampy and I think I got a metal imbalance which made my skin funny (ended up taking zinc supplements to balance the copper).

Mirena post-baby, didn't feel it going in, stopped periods but didn't like hormonal thing and cdnt work out if libido lower due to that or early motherhood!

Neither hurt being taken out. I'd go for copper if I had one again.

Thurmanmurman · 14/05/2019 22:55

Copper coil her. For me getting it fitted was similar to a smear test, maybe slightly more uncomfortable. I’ve had slightly heavier periods but my periods were very light before so a bit heavier is totally manageable (probably a different matter if you have heavy periods to start with though). Apart from that no symptoms and I’m not pregnant so it’s working for me!

Slazengerbag · 14/05/2019 22:57

I’m on my 2nd. The first was in for 10 years. I found getting it fitted and removed was no more uncomfortable than a smear and was over with very quickly. I spotted a bit the day it was fitted.

I have had no problems at all and as I have the copper coil I have no hormones which is perfect for me. I will have another one fitted in 7 years when this ones needs changing.

FaithInfinity · 14/05/2019 23:04

It sent me batty! The insertion and removal was mildly uncomfortable. The mood swings were something else. I was raging, paranoid, hysterical. I lasted 6 weeks before I begged my GP to remove it. After various attempts, I have concluded that hormonal contraceptives are not for me. My advice would be if you find other hormonal contraceptives are bad for you, avoid. If you don’t, it’s probably worth a bash.

abellanoa · 14/05/2019 23:32

Copper is likely to make your period heavier. Mine was normal to begin with and with the coil I couldn't stand periods, two weeks of the most awful cramps and I could soak through a super tampon and a pad in two hours, I could get away with one regular tampon for 6 hours before. It really just depends! Thing is all these stories detailing experience are just side effects that are listed online, you could get none, you could get several! I'd say give it a go and if you don't like it have it taken out and then you know 😊 It's unlikely anything awful will happen

Mmmmdanone · 15/05/2019 08:21

O have Mirena. No problems with it. No periods to speak of at all. Love it.

ForTheLoveOfDoughnuts · 15/05/2019 08:34

Had Mirena, nothing but positive. Had light bleeding for a few months then none at all!
Was a real lie changer for me!

Currently pregnant but will definitely have anything put in once the baby is out.

Jenny2014 · 15/05/2019 08:35

Like Faith I am driven crazy by my coil, hormones are just too much for me, but at almost 7 weeks in the doctor suggested waiting til 12 weeks as apparently it’ll settle. My periods were every 19 days and so so heavy, the one upside of the moody irrational me is that my cycle hasn’t changed but it’s the lightest period I’ve ever had.

tiutinkerbell · 15/05/2019 12:13

I had the Jaydess (3 year hormonal coil) inserted about 6 weeks ago as a break from 11 years on the pill. Insertion was a small bit uncomfortable as I haven't had babies yet and a small bit of cramping the next day, but apart from that all OK. I had some bleeding for a day or so when I stopped my pill (7 days after insertion) but since then it has been an absolute dream. No period, no cramps, no hormonal issues, no needing to remember to take a pill, partner can't feel anything and I've actually lost weight since insertion (around 2kg) without changing anything.

I never had any issues with the hormones from the pill either so that is probably why I am getting on so well with the coil. Would recommend it to anyone.
