To get cross when train staff don't announce the station?

I'm on an unfamiliar route to an unfamiliar station. My train was cancelled so I've no idea when I'm now due in and I forgot to ask so I can't even guess based on times. The staff have all vanished and intermittent signal means national rail enquiries site keeps dropping out.

It'll be fine but it would be so much easier if they would just say "train now arriving at...".

Could you look outside the train for signs when you pull into a stop?

WheresTheEvidence · 14/05/2019 10:26

Go on national rail and screen shot it. If you have enough signal to do that you should be ok to do that

badlydrawnperson · 14/05/2019 10:27

YANBU OP usually the flippers won’t shut up telling you.

badlydrawnperson · 14/05/2019 10:29

Extra bonus for “get cross” - very 1950s

OhYouBadBadKitten · 14/05/2019 10:31

Yanbu.
I ended up at entirely the wrong station at the weekend as they decided to travel fast for no apparent reason. I twigged when we were hurtling through unrecognisable countryside at high speed
I too was very cross and quite bewildered by what Google maps was telling me was my location.

Jeezoh · 14/05/2019 10:33

Can you ask another passenger?

Thatmustbemyname · 14/05/2019 10:36

@badlydrawnperson I love the expression 'get cross', I might start using it again - feels much more grown up and yes, very 1950s 😊
I might even be a 'crosspatch' , how very Enid Blyton!

YANBU.
I was once in a train in the dark where all the station signs were on a dark background and no conductor. Only because I vaguely knew the route and how long the journey was did I have any clue when to get off.

Prequelle · 14/05/2019 11:06

All trains should have those screen things with the current stop displayed. It's not fair for deaf people otherwise

redhotchill · 14/05/2019 11:07

YABU for using valuable signal time to post on Mumsnet when you could've been checking Trainline

BlueberriesAndCream · 14/05/2019 11:08

even if you don't have much signal, location services via google maps can sometimes still work - so you can see where you are (it uses a lot of battery, though, so I wouldn't leave it on all the time!)

ForalltheSaints · 14/05/2019 11:20

Great Northern still don't have announcements on some trains. In the 19th century along with their staffing at weekends.

Whitney168 · 14/05/2019 11:21

Download the wonderful Trainline app, it will tell you where you are and when you're due at your destination.

JustCallMeSliths · 14/05/2019 15:25

@redhotchill - National rail site would open and then crash before I got anywhere with it and the info needed redoing each time so I couldn't look. Other sites which didn't depend on putting info in were fine. Otherwise I would have been looking on it obviously.

A conductor appeared eventually and he told me how many stops. I got hopelessly lost when I got there though of course.

I once ended up getting off at the wrong station because I misheard the announcement. I ended up stuck at a one platform station with no one about in the dark with my 6 year old. It was in the middle of nowhere with no street lights anywhere or any indication of life. There wasn't even any taxi signs or maps. My sense of direction is shocking so I daren't try to find my way somewhere. It had suddenly got really, really cold so she ended up wrapped in my coat because it didn't fit both of us. I have never been so cold! My fingers still hurt at the thought of it. It was also a bit scary.

We were there an hour and had to get a train to the station I meant to get off at where we had to wait for another hour to get the train home. Luckily that one had a warmish waiting area and people!

I was only joking! But I'm pretty sure if you download trainline and buy your tickets through there it shows the journey offline. Might be worth a try for the future
