To not want to go through insurance?

Today after work I was in stationary traffic with a roundabout ahead when the car behind me tried to go around me to get to the roundabout because she was going to turn right. The road had one lane and only split into 2 lanes quite far ahead.

This car hit my drivers side towards the rear of my car and has caused deep scratches to my paintwork. The woman has a large scratch down the side of her car and a small dent.

She admitted fault and we swapped details and I have sent her a message showing her the damage to my car and have explained that I can go to the garage and get a quote. The woman has replied saying 'send me your details and I will speak to my insurance.' It seems like she now doesn't want to pay.

What do I do? I've never had an accident before and I don't want my premiums to go up because the damage is only around £120 worth. I have a dash cam that has recorded what happened and it is obvious that she was at fault.

Why does it need to be reported to the police?

HardAsSnails · 13/05/2019 22:30

No need to report to police as nobody was injured and you exchanged details.

It is almost always best to leave it to insurers after a crash.

MagicKingdomDizzy · 13/05/2019 22:35

I claimed on the other drivers insurance when someone backed into me.

The damage of a light bump was surprising, and most of it was underneath where you can't see.

It was a no fault claim (not my fault). I've just renewed my insurance and my premiums have gone down, not up. Not sure why people insist your premiums always go up even for a non fault claim, as it's not true.

Definitely go through her insurance, but let your company know too.

Why would I need to contact the police? The driver who hit me stopped and exchanged details.

@crazycatgal do you have a witness? My experience is that you should always have a witness as the person at fault could change there story and say it was your fault.

Someone hit my sister in the back of her car as he was trying to merge in slow moving traffic, he admitted at the time he was at fault but then later told his insurance that my sister reversed her car in to him. Luckily she had a witness that could say that he was at fault.

@HighsandLows77 No unfortunately I don't, plenty of people myst have seen it but as it was rush hour traffic people were probably more bothered about getting home. I do have dashcam footage though.

Oh great sorry I missed that earlier, I hope it all goes smoothly for you it’s a hassle isn’t it!

furrybadger · 13/05/2019 23:17

Having protected no claims bonus doesn’t protect the cost of your insurance following a claim, your premium may still increase even if your not at fault, however you will still keep however many years no claims your currently have and still get a discount for your no claims bonus.

OrangeFluff · 13/05/2019 23:18

You are suposed to tell your insurance about any accident you have, whether claiming or not- no claim would be a "notification only". Otherwise you are commiting fraud as you are ommiting information about your driving history (although I am aware that lots of people wont tell their insurance)

Yes your premiums can go up even if you are not at fault, but you wont lose your No Claims Discount.
