Has anyone got an air fryer?? I am thinking of getting one but wondering if they actually make good chips and what else people cook in them?

Also which one do you have?

Thank you

I have an actifry. Yes they do good chips. They are bulky though and take up loads of room

Frouby · 13/05/2019 19:34

I've got a Philips one, it's fab and makes brilliant chips and potato wedges. I don't cook anything else in it, purely because if I am getting it out, I am having chips but ky friend cooks all sorts in hers.

It doesn't leave that fatty, greasy smell in the kitchen either. Love it and wouldn't be without one now. I only use it once a week on average but apparently the chips are pretty healthy as chips go as you use so little oil. 1 tablespoon does a decent portion each for me and DH and most of it is left in the bottom anyway.

Dramaofallama · 13/05/2019 19:39

I recently purchased one and so far I have no complaints. So far so good.
I have cooked chips in them, battered fish ect and it has taken half the time it would have to oven cook them and no smell as you would get from regular frying. I've only got it recently so need to explore more with what I can cook with it but it is definitely a good purchase and easy to clean.
It does get very hot though so be wary of when removing food from it.

I have an actifry, use it most weeks. Cos always taste good and are cooked well. Use it to do mini garlic and herb roast potatoes, they are so yummy!!! It's one of the recipes that comes with it!
But as @praying said, it's bulky and takes up a lot of cupboard space, and we only have the small one...

goose1964 · 13/05/2019 19:46

We have one and haven't worked out how to do chips yet. Some were burnt and others soggy.

CheshireChat · 13/05/2019 19:47

It's also good for cooking little stuff like a naan pizza or stuff like that. I also got a quiche in and it was absolutely fine.

SmallPinkBear · 13/05/2019 19:49

Thanks for all the advice. I will have to measure the cupboard!

Placemarking! I had one but wasn’t a well known brand - was pretty useless. Thinking about buying a dearer one though heard loads of good reports

CheshireChat · 13/05/2019 19:50

I also bake sweet potatoes in it as I don't have a microwave and I begrudge putting the oven on for 2 small potatoes.

SmallPinkBear · 13/05/2019 19:50

cheshire ooohhh naan pizza sounds good Grin

It's also good for junk food obviously so chicken nuggets and the like.

leghairdontcare · 13/05/2019 19:53

Pretty much all types of potatoes - great for roast potatoes to get them really crispy.

Very handy for quick teas for the kids - fish fingers etc.

FlyingElbows · 13/05/2019 19:54

I do nice stir fry in my Actifry. It's a great bit of kit but it is massive.

cherryblossomgin · 13/05/2019 19:56

I have one, it was from Tesco. I use it nearly every day.

Roast new potatoes
Sweet potatoes
Shallots
Meat alternatives
Cheesy nachos
Apple crisps
Tofu fries

That's just a small list, I prefer to use it instead of the oven because it's quicker I can cook my potatoes, veg and quorn or tofu in one go.

SmallPinkBear · 13/05/2019 19:57

You have all sold it to me (I am far to easily influenced- good job I avoid Instagram Grin)
Thank you everyone
Though please carry on posting ideas of what I can cook in it Smile

I have a Phillips one and its my favourite kitchen appliance, it's used all the time.

CheshireChat · 13/05/2019 20:00

Ooh, can you roast shallots in it?

Gertie75 · 13/05/2019 20:01

I only use mine for chips, be warned though they taste nothing like proper chips and need plenty of seasoning to taste nice, it's a different method of cooking a potato but they're definitely not chips.

00100001 · 13/05/2019 20:03

I have a second hand Philips.

It's bloody brilliant. Cook everything from chips, roast meat, cakes,to lasagne in it.
It's a micro fan oven really. But cooks things quicker and is cheaper.

Done full in roast in one when our oven was dead.

Roasted pork joint.
Par boiled potatoes, and finished them off in air fryer as the roast meat was resting.

Delicious!

mum11970 · 13/05/2019 20:25

Had a Philips Air Fryer one for years but when it died we bought a cheaper Tefal one. Used pretty much every day. We cook absolutely anything and everything that would be grilled, oven cooked or deep fried. We even use it for par cooked bread rolls.

PillowTalker · 13/05/2019 20:29

Great bit of kit

MustBeThin · 13/05/2019 20:42

Great timing seeing this thread! I ordered the ninja air fryer earlier today, I will be getting it tomorrow. Grin I already make homemade oven chips so will do them in the air fryer now, don't think I need to par boil them either? I plan on using it a lot this summer rather than heating up the whole oven and making the kitchen really hot. If it fits in the air fryer its going in. Grin
I've seen some accessories on Amazon too, like racks so you can cook 2 tiers of food or use them to rest skewers on to make kebabs. I'm going to see how I get on with the fryer then I will probably end up buying those too.

nixso29 · 13/05/2019 21:26

I have the Tefal 2in1 actifry and would not be without it! Honestly use it nearly every day. The bottom I use for chips, can buy the fresh pre-cut ones from the fruit & veg aisle and sprinkle some Schwartz chip seasoning on top 😍 the top bit I use for almost everything else, burgers, sausages, chicken drumsticks. If you are going to invest and think you would use it regularly I definitely would recommend paying a little bit more for the 2in1 version
