Car parking etiquette

Mcpheenanny · 13/05/2019 15:46

I've come to a large Tesco to do a large shop. My toddler has fallen asleep, so I parked at the very back of the car park, in a shady spot to let her have 20 mins.

I'm the only car in this section until a car pulled up right next door to me containing 2 men, who look about 30 years old.

This is odd, right? It's made me feel really uncomfortable, they keep looking over. I would move but then it's really obvious. They have eaten food and had a cigarette and show no moves to leave. Surely they know I would feel uncomfortable?

They probably keep looking over because:
a) you keep looking at them (you must have looked a few times, otherwise how would you know they're both about 30 and that they've smoked and eaten?) and;
b) if they can't see your kid asleep in the back you just look like a person on their own in a car and they maybe think you're a bit sus. Perhaps they think you're waiting for the dealer to turn up with a bit of the old nose ningle.

Sirzy · 13/05/2019 16:22

HAve you seriously been sat in your car for well over half an hour?

Innersmellbow · 13/05/2019 16:26

Perhaps they parked there because its easier to park alongside another car than in an open space.

RaptorWhiskers · 13/05/2019 16:26

Sirzy I sit in my car for longer than that on my own drive! If DC is sleeping in the car seat I just connect to the home WiFi and watch Netflix on my phone. Because if I wake DC up to go indoors the peace and quiet will be over and I won’t be allowed to watch Netflix at all!

specterlitt · 13/05/2019 16:26

What is the problem here other than you being insanely precious? Hmm.

outvoid · 13/05/2019 16:27

What are you thinking they are planning on doing exactly? You are in a car, lock the doors and drive away.

RaptorWhiskers · 13/05/2019 16:28

its easier to park alongside another car than in an open space
How?! I purposely park away from other cars because I’m a shit driver and it’s easier to park when there’s no other car nearby to hit 😂

SaveKevin · 13/05/2019 16:30

Do you think of it was sinister they would choose to park next to the car with someone in, or empty spaces?

badlydrawnperson · 13/05/2019 16:31

Some tool always parks next to me as well. At the weekend I parked in a small pay and display for a few hours. Mine was the only car there. When I came back the only other vehicle was parked next to mine. No idea why people do this but perhaps they are part of the 90+ percent who seem to have no idea there even is anyone else in the world at all.

daisyjgrey · 13/05/2019 16:31

Perhaps keep a few traffic cones in your boot and pop them in the spaces either side of your car to prevent people having the sheer audacity to park within ten feet of you?

AnchorDownDeepBreath · 13/05/2019 16:34

Surely they know I would feel uncomfortable?

Why? You are just sitting in your car, like they are. There is nothing for you to be uncomfortable about.

Plenty of people find it easier to park next to a car, rather than an empty space, it's easier to line up against an existing car. Plenty of people do it, it used to drive me insane because I'd deliberately park away to make it easier to get back into the car after spinal surgery, and someone would ALWAYS be next to me.

ourkidmolly · 13/05/2019 16:38

Yeah weird behaviour, you feel uneasy so move.

CuriousaboutSamphire · 13/05/2019 16:39

Well you'd love me. I'd squeeze in between other parked cars for a shady spot even if the rest of the car park is absolutely empty!

The puppy and I prefer eating our lunch in the shade... and I couldn't care who thinks I am mad, weird or in any way unreasonable!

INeedAFlerken · 13/05/2019 16:47

I think you're overreacting, tbh.

IN our big Tesco car park, lots of road workers, business people, others, park up in the back of the parking lot at lunch time where there's more shade and open space. They pick up lunch, eat, they talk on their phones, they smoke ... and then they drive off back to wherever they work. Nowhere else for them to go at lunchtime, I imagine, but they do want to get away from their worksites, offices...

Everydaypeople · 13/05/2019 16:47

Maybe they always park there and they wonder why a weird woman has taken their spot and keeps staring at them.
If it bothers you that much,. No one else will even care or notice.

Jaxhog · 13/05/2019 16:47

Some people do this. You can even be the ony car in a carpark, and the next person parks right next to you. It's weird.

If you're uncomfortable, I'd move. If it's innocent, they won't notice. If they follow you, then you'll know it isn't and can leave. Either way, the problem is gone.

AnAC12UCOinanOCG · 13/05/2019 16:50

I prefer parking next to someone because it's easier to line yourself up if you are reversing in
I never understand this argument. This is what the lines are for, not other cars!

BossAssBitch · 13/05/2019 17:09

YANBU

Some people are irksome space invaders! I too would find it a bit odd that they decided to park right next to you in an otherwise empty part of the car park. I would definitely move though and I wouldn't care what they thought, they should use some sense. A bit like idiot men who walk right up behind you on a quiet street and then seem surprised when you look scared Hmm

And to the person who commented how do you know they are staring, you must be staring at them to know. Of course you can sense when you are being stared at without staring yourself! Peripheral vision.

You won't get many sensible replies on here though, OP, AIBU is full of contrarians who get off with disagreeing with common sense to antagonise.

Eustasiavye · 13/05/2019 17:22

I agree with you op.
I like my personal space and would find this weird.
When dd2 was a new born I took her and my other dcs and my mum to the coast.
I parked out of the way in a huge car park for a toilet break.
Mum took my dcs to the toilet and I began to breastfeed dd2. It was not so I had my passenger door open for fresh air.
The next thing I heard beeping and looking around saw it was a woman beeping at me to shut my passenger door so that she could park right next to me.
A passing motorist must have cottoned on as he gestured that he would shut my door, as it happened I couldn't reach it anyway not without getting out of my car and disturbing my dd2.
As the woman pulled into the parking spot, she totally misjudged it and mounted the pavement in front of us just as my mum and kids were walking towards the car.
Totally batshit.
It wasn't even a wide parking bay.

Harebel · 13/05/2019 17:29

Car parking "etiquette" is people can park where they like. If you don't like it, move. Problem solved.

YABU.

MrsHormonal2019 · 13/05/2019 17:35

Haha me and my husband on a long motorway trip parked right at back of car park where it was dead to ahem christen car, for some very annoying reason this other car then decided to choose the spot right next to us!
Was tamping lol. Of all the places to park. Moment ruined!

IWantMyHatBack · 13/05/2019 18:32

Eh?

badlydrawnperson · 14/05/2019 12:52

@MrsHormonal2019 Your post seems to have been mangled into nonsense - presumably by autocorrect.
