www.mirror.co.uk/news/uk-news/mare-newborn-foal-die-because-15637103

Big cycle race of 100 miles in our area yesterday. Road closures from 5.30 am till 12.30 pm. Some streets were totally cut off for the whole time.

Residents were just told they should have parked outside the area the night before. For some that would mean a walk of a mile, given how many roads were closed. One family escorted through because they had a flight to catch but had to wait 25 minutes for an escort.

Carers were unable to visit the housebound clients, meals on wheels couldn't get through and the stewards didn't give a stuff. For some people it wasn't a question of finding a way around there were areas that were totally cut off for the duration.

But worst of all the stewards wouldn't let a emergency vet through and a mare and her foal died. The foal would have been worth a lot of money as was the mare. I hope the owner sues for every penny she can.

Residents are very angry and cannot understand why permission was granted for this to happen. If they try it again vigilantes have said they'll force the roads open if they try to close them. Feelings running very high.

DonkeyHohtay

When I worked i cardiology I would have a week 'on call', I worked my normal day but if there was an emergency I would be called in, as would other staff.

You cannot plan for it other than having people on call, you can't park your car a mile away as you need to get to the hospital quickly.

You also cannot plan sudden illness needing medical treatment or an ambulance.

The HAS to be some way of getting people in and out of the closed off area.

BlueSkiesLies · 14/05/2019 08:36

God I need to stop reading this thread and other cyclist threads. Full of such miserable hysterical NIMBY women who are outrgaged that they have been mildly inconvenienced for one day, so are catastrophizing doing a lot of whattaboutry to try and make a point.

what if you are in labour, or you feel the need to take your child to hospital but you literally can't get there? It's a recipe for disaster.

You're being obtuse on purpose.

There were motorbikes available to escort cars through where needed, and stewards were letting cars through when safe.

How many reports do we have of women giving birth by the side of velo Birmingham because they weren't let though? Zero. Fucks sake, get a grip on the actual reality of life.

WHAT IF A GIANT DRAGON HAD SWOOPED DOWN AND SET FIRE TO AN ENTIRE CULDESAC AND THE RESIDENTS COULDN'T GET OUT BECAUSE THE CYCLISTS WERE ACTUALLY BIO TERRORISTS AND WERE SPREADING EBOLA????????????????

UrsulaPandress · 14/05/2019 08:39

Ok. Going back to the mare and foal that bled to death because the jobsworth steward wouldn't let the vet through.

Hi exactly is that acceptable in any shape or form?

grimupnorthLondon · 14/05/2019 08:40

Or how about if a horse and foal died @blueskylies? Which is what actually happened.

As I and others have said in this thread there is a very real objection to this not on the grounds of a general aversion to cyclists but on the basis that the roads are a public good and shouldn't be "privatised" on this scale for this long so that a private company can profit from a middle class minority indulging in their hobby. People cycling for transport is obviously an excellent idea and I'm not objecting to that.

sonlypuppyfat · 14/05/2019 08:41

Op I know exactly what estate you live on and it was completely cut off wasn't it. Where on earth could you have moved all your car's to? Tescos car park? ! It was absolute madness

VeloHostage · 14/05/2019 08:41

People who say just walk are not really getting it.

and are the sort of people who never see people in wheelchairs. Everyday disableism.

BlueSkiesLies · 14/05/2019 08:43

The tour de Yorkshire passed through my village and the road was closed for 20minutes! Why 7hours of closures?

Because it isn't a small group of elite riders riding together and racing in a peleton but a mass event with elites going through to many thousands of normal riders.

Lifeover · 14/05/2019 08:44

Ursula yes it’s a commercial venture by Sebastian cos company. There was no link to a charitable organisation some participants did use the event to raise money I understand but it was primarily a commercial enterprise aimed at making money with 17,000 riders paying either a £75 or £115 entrance fee so a turnover in the region of £1.5million. I fortunately in order for the shareholders to “earn” this money it meant trapping the elderly in their own homes, slowing down emergency care, causing the death of horse and foal, everyone who needed to get anywhere prob on average paying an extra £5 in fuel and adding to pollution. Not to mention people being denied access to give essential care to vulnerable people. But so long as seb co got his £1.5 million eh? It’s clear very little of this money was put into the organisation, I know in previous cells they ran out of food at the food stations

People prattling on about tourism/just walk/it’s only one day etc haven’t really thought through the situation beyond their own, well we’ve nothing better to do today let’s just cheer on the Lycra brigade. I would urge everyone who was affected to contact their MP. We can’t allow it back again.

SnuggyBuggy · 14/05/2019 08:45

I supposed for people who are generally pissed off by the lycra brigade this must have felt like a massive fuck you.

longestlurkerever · 14/05/2019 08:46

Going against the grain here. Yes they should absolutely cater for emergencies but to get so outraged because you can't use your car for half a day is OTT. We are in a climate emergency. We need to rethink this over reliance on cars.

DaisiesAreOurSilver · 14/05/2019 08:47

You're the one in need of a reality check, @BlueSkiesLies . A mare and a foal died. Housebound people were left all day with no support or food. The carers weren't allowed through.

Just so the boys could play with their toys.

So many capital letters. Are you all right, hun?

BlueSkiesLies

All I can say to that is that when the first of these stupid events came round I was heavily pregnant, booked in for a homebirth and I was really bloody worried about it. Maybe it would have been fine, yeah, but it wasn't a risk I was willing to take. Fortunately it wasn't that day that I did go into labour...it was another day and due to a very prompt midwife and then very quick ambulance I was ok.
Oh, and just so you know, I know lots of men who objected to it to, so not just us unreasonable women then.

Raspberry88 · 14/05/2019 08:48

We are in a climate emergency. We need to rethink this over reliance on cars.

That's why I use buses!!! Which were cancelled!!!

KennDodd · 14/05/2019 08:51

@longestlurkerever
Completely agree.

SnuggyBuggy · 14/05/2019 08:51

I agree we are too reliant on cars but that's surely more the fault of poor planning and infrastructure.

And yes obviously busses not running isn't going to inspire anyone to stop using the car

Lifeover · 14/05/2019 08:52

Blue skies did you not read further up about another closed road race where someone’s DH lost a day that he could have spent with his dying father because of someone’s hobby. He died 2days later. If I was living one road over I would have been unable to get to hospital to see me very ill dad who is unlikely to survive (sorry I didn’t plan this or walk the 50 miles). If you think someone’s HOBBY is more important than getting to dying relatives I suggest you have a very serious issue and get some help

Moanranger · 14/05/2019 08:54

For posters who say oh, it’s all planned, risk assessments, etc, I would query that. We have a similar one in our area, and it goes through on the nod, with little to no forward notice to residents, planning, etc (County Council) In my view, these events need to plan their routes much better. It is all done to benefit organisers first & mugs who pay to attend a distant second. It also co-opts & gains huge financial benefit from the public realm, eg, the highways, which we own & as taxpayers pay for. Gives me the rage.

longestlurkerever · 14/05/2019 08:55

I'm not saying this event was well run or anything like that, but people acting as if cars are a God- given entitlement are causing more deaths than cyclists closing a road for a day. And that's coming from someone who doesn't even own a bike.

Lifeover · 14/05/2019 08:55

And yes to cycling for transport, in fact we do. Ironically it was almost impossible to get anywhere on a bike as the diversions were via motorways. This race had nothing to do with encouraging cycling for alternative transport. Maybe the £1.5 million could be invested in providing more cycle routes lord co eh???

A mare and a foal died.

Which probably woudl have died anyway, given the vet was given a police escort and allowed through....

Don't let the facts get in the say of a good value signalling story though yeah?

DaisiesAreOurSilver · 14/05/2019 09:08

Eventually. When it was too late. And only after the owner threatened to drive her horse box through the barrier and stop the race.

You seem to have difficulty understanding facts. Read the newspaper reports before you look an even bigger fool.

Carers carnt just plan around it. They have a list of clients, that they have to see in order at set times to offer valuable care like getting out of bed, making food, medication. They then repeat all the clients later in the day. They clients are often spread out with 15-30 minutes drive between each client. They carnt just walk or plan around the event when vulnerable clients are waiting for their care.
