AIBU re hairdresser

AIBU to expect the colourist to dry my hair before I leave the salon?

I haven't much experience of what to expect so would appreciate advice. I booked highlights and a cut which are done by different stylists but when I arrived the colour had to be rescheduled as her car had broken down. I had the cut last week, and returned for the colour this morning.

She did a lovely job, washed it and then said 'there you go' and charged me. I asked if she was going to dry it and she said no she didn't do that. I was a bit taken aback as I was going straight to work and hadn't considered it wouldn't be dried so I asked to borrow a dryer and she was very short with me but did get out this huge very heavy hairdryer that I could barely hold due to arthritis in my shoulder - I use a travel drier at home. Eventually, after a few aborted attempts an elderly woman sat in the waiting area came and offered to help me which was so embarrassing I thanked her, made my excuses and left!

Would you have expected your hair to be dried? I am not going to make a big fuss, I just want to know the norm as it seemed odd to leave with wet hair.

Thank you

Yes. I’d expect it dried. How else are you going to see the colour otherwise.

regmover · 13/05/2019 14:52

Yes I would, I would expect them to send you out looking presentable because they were the ones who had to cancel the appointment.

mouldyhousemouldylife · 13/05/2019 14:53

It's ridiculous that a hairdresser would let you leave looking anything other than good. Leaving with wet hair? Who on earth would be happy with that? Yanbu.

SirVixofVixHall · 13/05/2019 14:53

That is bonkers! How can you see the colour properly with wet hair ? I would complain .

bigbadbadger · 13/05/2019 14:54

Thank you - good point on seeing the colour. She has done a good job but I feel horrible with it all damp at work :(

Definitely would expect it cut - was it one of those places where you pay seperately for each 'bit' - I went to a Supercuts once and was charged extra for straightening after blow drying which was odd to me - with a cut and colour I would expect at least a blow dry, you can't see the true colour otherwise

bigbadbadger · 13/05/2019 14:56

Awkward because the woman who cuts my hair was a client of mine for 10 years so I know her v well and she is the salon owner.

PuppyMonkey · 13/05/2019 14:56

Of course. Dried and straightened is the norm anywhere I’ve been.

The colourist maybe doesn’t always do the drying but they’d get someone else or something. But it all sounds a bit odd re you going in separately - not your fault but odd.

I’d complain.

bigbadbadger · 13/05/2019 14:57

I have checked the website and it says
Cut and blowdry £56
Highlights - full head £86

so they do specify, I didn't think to check. But as they cancelled I think they should have made it clear to me that they were not going to dry it as I would not have agreed to come just before work.

It was a bit odd. I walked in and the woman who cuts my hair was in a flap and asked if I would rebook the colour as her car had broken down on the way to work. I thought I was being helpful so am annoyed I had to leave with wet hair. I suppose I could have made a big fuss about the heavy dryer as another stylist was using a more normal looking one I could have managed.

Absolutely fucking bonkers - of COURSE they dry it, who goes out (let alone leave a salon) with wet hair?

Does she understand the word stylist?

I'd have a word with salon manager.

Jaxhog · 13/05/2019 15:06

Wow. So the salon made you come back a second time for the colour and then didn't even dry your hair! Very poor.

Hopefully, a would-be client saw you leave with wet hair and decided not to go there. If they have an online review page, I would tell your story there too. I wouldn't be going back.

user1493413286 · 13/05/2019 15:07

Yes of course they should dry it; often they’ll offer you a proper blow dry that they might charge you for or a quick dry off which is probably more like what you’d do yourself at home

Mummyoflittledragon · 13/05/2019 15:08

In these circumstances ywnbu. She should have dried it for you. Or got someone else to do it. Don’t they have a junior?

J0nesy · 13/05/2019 15:14

I would 100% expect to have my hair blow dried! Especially when it was not your fault that the appointment had to be changed.

I would telephone and raise a complaint and if they did not offer me a compliment blow dry for the inconvenience I would be looking for another hair dresser!

Mitzimaybe · 13/05/2019 15:15

YANBU for all the reasons mentioned above. Even without changing the date of the cut, they should dry your hair after a colour just so you can see how the colour has turned out! I would never expect to pay for a colour and leave with wet hair. Then factor in that they were the ones who asked you to reschedule, and they should be going out of their way to make sure you are happy and satisfied.

murree · 13/05/2019 15:15

mine won't let me leave with wet hair! I don't like it blow dried but they insist I at least have it rough dried.

PuppyMonkey · 13/05/2019 15:15

If you know the salon owner, I’d send her an email saying how disappointed you were - especially as you were trying to be helpful by agreeing to come bak again instead of just rescheduling the whole thing (which is maybe what you should’ve done in hindsight).

DPotter · 13/05/2019 15:24

I regularly have my hair coloured and have never left the salon without my hair being dried. They would prefer the blow dry which is a waste of everyone's time as my hair does it's own thing within 5 mins of leaving, so now the hairdresser 'rough dries'. But they would never let me leave without drying.

bigbadbadger · 13/05/2019 15:24

thanks everyone, glad I wasn't expecting too much.

TheHodgeoftheHedge · 13/05/2019 15:25

I've certainly never had my hair coloured and not been blow dryed after. As someone else said, you can't even tell the colour is right and you're happy with it until it's dry!

LillithsFamiliar · 13/05/2019 15:26

There was a thread just last week where someone had their hair coloured but they only did a rough dry afterwards and sent her out of the salon with her hair a frizzy mess.

Lovelydovey · 13/05/2019 15:28

Well you got what you paid for, but they should have made clear before they started that it didn’t involve a blow dry or even rough dry. THis is why they dont normally allow colour to be booked separately and insist on booking a cut and blow dry or stand alone blow dry with it.

bigbadbadger · 13/05/2019 15:30

Yes, had I known I would have rebooked the whole thing. I have now dried it by holding my head upside down in a local cafe toilet. (I did check with the cafe owner first!)

GarnierBBCream · 13/05/2019 15:30

Very, very poor form on her part. I would be pretty fucked off. Would at the least tell her how disappointed I am, might leave a bad review, would never go back. You can't properly see how the colour turns out until it's dry. I have no idea how hairdressers stay in business these days because so many of them take the utter piss.
