No not and STD that I am aware of!

We have been living in our large renovation project since last July. Since then I suspected we may have mice setting up residence with us but since Christmas I have been in no doubt at all.

The buggers have gotten so cocky that come 9pm they quite happily stroll past us without a hint of fear. They constantly steal food, the most recent being my DP finding one little blighter happily dragging a whole bag of crisps with him.

They have chewed through the back of kitchen cupboards and eaten a whole bag of porridge at the back. They are also partial to Jammy Dodgers.

We purchased the trap back in January with no luck at all. In fact they would eat the food at the front of the trap that was designed to entice them but would leave the bits where they would set the trap off.

Last night we were discussing what to do about the situation, looking at possibly hiring a company to come help. This morning when I came into the kitchen I noticed our dog acting very strange and scared of one particular corner of the kitchen. I was and am so pleased when I found this little bastard in there!

Anyone have any tips on how else to catch them? I am guessing we have a fair size infestation by now. I have been reluctant to use poisons but I suffer with a number of health conditions and am worried about the disease they may be carrying/could possibly cause.

Any help at all would be most helpful Smile (dog is absolutely terrified of them as well).

Remember to release it far enough away that it can’t come back.

itscallednickingbentcoppers · 13/05/2019 10:41

Ah it's quite cute isn't it!

EleanorReally · 13/05/2019 10:42

you need poison, you can buy it from amazon, in places your dog cannot reach though

Mabelface · 13/05/2019 10:43

Pad out the holes they're coming through with wire wool. They hate it and won't chew through.

Maddiemademe · 13/05/2019 10:43

It is adorable, that is why I am reluctant to kill them Sad. DP is going to drive a few miles away shortly to release it.

Humane traps are a waste of time, it is also not humane to release a mouse somewhere else. If you cannot do it your self you need to bring in the experts. Your council will do it for a small fee. Poison is the way to go

Soubriquet · 13/05/2019 10:43

We I love mice

Had plenty of pet ones and I’ve caught and handled a wild one to release back in the garden (cat bought it in)

Maddiemademe · 13/05/2019 10:43

Good tip about wire wool. Will see if we have any.

Your dog's face 😂

EleanorReally · 13/05/2019 10:45

your council may come out, for a fee

MonkeyfaceThereturn · 13/05/2019 10:45

Absolutely not poison! It causes internal bleeding and a painful slow death 😭

You need snap traps. Sad but true.

buttertoasty · 13/05/2019 10:46

We have pest control coming in at the moment for a mice and rat problem. Over 6 months we caught 3 on our own and that was more luck than anything.

I feel for you, it is a real pain. The pest control man advised against us using poison as the dogs may be at risk of secondary poisoning.

ZippyBungleandGeorge · 13/05/2019 10:46

I wouldn't use poison, they don't die immediately, DHs aunt ended up with a dead one under her floorboards rotting, and it cost a fair amount to have the floor taken up and replaced without damaging it! As brutal as they seem we've found these are the best

Sorry not much help, but your doggo is adorable

Pugpigprick · 13/05/2019 10:50

Have you tried the high pitch plug thingys (technical jargon).

I think they usually come in a pack of two but you'll probably need a few more. It makes their lives uncomfortable enough to leave on their own accord.

Or a cat.. any excuse for a cat ;)

ivegotthisyeah · 13/05/2019 10:52

The sticky pads are really good but obviously the mice die, but I did the trick in my garage

MaxNormal · 13/05/2019 10:52

Humane traps are actually anything but, although they make humans feel better. The animal will be massively stressed for a prolonged period and unlikely to survive if put in a random new location.

Poison is horrible. They haemorrhage to death slowly over a period of days. There is also the risk of secondary poisoning should your dog, a neighbour's pet or a bird of prey catch them.

The most humane way of dealing with the issue is a breakback trap, which will kill them instantly. You can buy attractor bait to put on it which makes them very likely to take it.

MaxNormal · 13/05/2019 10:53

And I've just seen the previous post. The "sticky pads", or glue traps, are hideously cruel. They will likely break or gnaw their own legs off. The things should be banned.

Hairyheadphones · 13/05/2019 10:54

I would call the council, mine has a reduced fee for all, to get someone on who can clear them all then block up holes with wire wool.

steppemum · 13/05/2019 10:57

hmm, hate to say this, but that looks quite ratty.

What is its tail like? If zero fur, then it is a rat.
Only advantage is that if you have rats, you won't have mice!

spring traps, go round with a fine toothed comb and fill every single hole, they can get through a hole big enough for a biro!
Wire wool the holes. Fill everything.

Snap traps with chocolate or peanut butter for bait

EleanorReally · 13/05/2019 10:58

We put poison down, no smell

Deadringer · 13/05/2019 10:58

Old fashioned snap traps are the best imo, they almost always die instantly, and at least they have a bit of chocolate before they go.

AnnaMagnani · 13/05/2019 11:01

Cats are useless. I had mice despite having 3 perfectly capable cats.

The mice just live where the cats don't go.

The high-pitched sound thing is also useless. Might work if you have no mice to stop them moving in, but if you already have mice, they just ignore it.

You might feel that mouse is less cute when you realise it is incontinent and everywhere it has gone, is covered in mouse wee.

I got a man in, poison down where cats couldn't find it. Result - no mice.
