People who write "with regards to" and "in regards to"

It drives me mad. Why the additional 's'?

I can be reading a well-reasoned post but as soon as I see this, I switch off.

It's annoying.

They're probably getting confused with "Best regards..." or something like that.

echt · 13/05/2019 10:06

It's endemic in Australia, indeed I haven't encountered it until I moved here. Supposedly well-educated people say it.

Possible confusion with "as regards", e.g. as regards the matter of X. better to say regarding the matter of X.

Irrationally I don't like Best Regards at the end of emails/letters.

Jemima232 · 13/05/2019 10:30

ehct

Definitely better to say "regarding."

I don't think it's irrational to dislike "Best regards" in letters/emails.

They're a bit undereducated, and think it's the more 'formal' or 'proper' way to say "about."

Pardonwhat · 13/05/2019 10:45

I think that youre thinking too much.
Definitely doesn’t mean someone’s ‘undereducated’ as a pp said Smile

BuzzShitbagBobbly · 13/05/2019 10:49

oooh the "kind regards" debate has been boiling for years.... Grin

@pardonwhat

I do think it shows that people are under-educated.

Jemima232 You’re entitled to think whatever you like but the reality is that it’s quite a regionalised thing.

AnyoneButAnton · 13/05/2019 20:22

I only ever write wrt anyway. In future, having read that link, I will say it’s not laziness, it’s a tribute to the late David Foster Wallace (who I haven’t actually read).

Hepte · 13/05/2019 20:32

I think it's a bit irrational but we all have things which irritate us more than they should. The people saying they are uneducated are just coming across as rude and judgemental IMO.

Stevienickssleeves · 13/05/2019 20:37

Under educated? During which year of your degree did you cover use of "regards"? Or was it post graduate?

BuzzShitbagBobbly · 13/05/2019 20:39

YES! You are the fourth person in the world I know who uses this now, including me! I picked it up from someone, used it, trained my boss to use it and now there's you too (oooh, maybe you are the first 'someone'!)

AnyoneButAnton · 13/05/2019 20:40

And the late David Foster Wallace of course.

wrt is very common in certain fields, but apparently everyone else is clueless - I say keep spreading the word
Although if we're being pedantic it's with respect to, but means the same.

Jemima232 · 13/05/2019 23:10

I expect "with respect to" will become "with respects to" at some point.

Call 101 and make them aware.
“In regards to the use of the word of regard , people are littering the Internet with incorrect usage, trace their IP addresses and put them under some kind of Internet black out please”

IfOnlyOurEyesSawSouls · 13/05/2019 23:34

Yes of course @Jemima232

People who use these phrases are definitely under educated HmmHmmHmm

Leftielefterson · 14/05/2019 00:08

The confusion of ‘your’ and ‘you’re’ has a similar effect on me.

mouldyhousemouldylife · 14/05/2019 00:24

I really wouldn't say I'm undereducated just because it I've been saying a phrase wrong, one which I don't even recall being taught. What do you want? That my spider sense tingles and I double check everything I write on the off chance I was miseducated in the use of a single phrase? No. I make an effort to use good spelling and grammar and trusted I was using it properly. Whenever I learnt the phrase that was how it was written and how I continued to see it used. Fairly straightforward mistake.

But now that I AM aware... I can use it properly!

Although I do prefer to be educated about something in a less snobbish manner. I'd put money on every single one of you sneering at this also misusing a certain phrase or misspelling a common word.

TinselAndKnickers · 14/05/2019 00:45

I believe it was second year, during the module Holierthanthouology.

Walkingdeadfangirl · 14/05/2019 00:52

YABU
Why should anyone use the meanings of words as determined by you? Language evolves, if you cant cope with that then maybe you need to grow up!

Hepte · 14/05/2019 09:11

Grin I love this!!!

Theghosttrain · 14/05/2019 09:13
