What on god’s earth is this? Please tell me, without any context, what you think this critter is.

Flea?

Howyoualldoworkme · 13/05/2019 07:58

Looks like a flea

Stormwhale · 13/05/2019 07:58

Yep that's a flea.

Aquamarine1029 · 13/05/2019 08:02

Definitely a flea.

Alienspaceship · 13/05/2019 08:04

Yes, it’s a flea.

Enidthecat · 13/05/2019 08:05

Indorex spray is your friend.

longwayoff · 13/05/2019 08:09

Flea? Maybe but looks quite large. Can it be the hatched out stage of woodworm? Had an infestation many years ago, looked very similar.

vivariumvivariumsvivaria · 13/05/2019 08:22

Dunno, is that thing on your KNEE?

Pretty big flea.

Chocolateandcarbs · 13/05/2019 08:22

Looks like a flea to me, you just need to spray the house. If you’re worried get a local pest control person over. A friend had her house fumigated for around £200.

Bunchofparsley · 13/05/2019 08:23

Absolutely, definitely, a flea.

PeakedTooEarly · 13/05/2019 08:26

If that is your nail, it's an adult flea. If it's your knee, it's scary.

HoppingPavlova · 13/05/2019 08:40

Dunno, is that thing on your KNEE?

No, it’s clearly on her fingernail.

Whywonttheyletmeusemyusername · 13/05/2019 08:47

Thats too big to ne a flea surely ?

lozengeoflove · 13/05/2019 09:07

Yes, that’s my finger nail (had to enlarge the pic).
Some context: cat had fleas. Two and a bit weeks ago he was treated at the vet’s and house was fumigated. These little jumpy fuckers are still to be found, but only in one part of the front room weirdly! They make an unwelcomed appearance on baby’s head, of all places.

I was just about to call the pest control again, when I noticed one in my daughter’s hair. She stayed at nanny’s last night, so I saw it when I picked her up this morning. Nanny doesn’t have fleas in my house, to my knowledge - could this be very large, mutant lice? Do I need to shave all our heads and burn the house down? 🤢😱

^^In her house, too distraught for grammar clearly...

Pugworld · 13/05/2019 09:20

Yep, that's a flea.

If you have pets, get them to the vet for flea treatment. Hoover the house thoroughly, spray with Indorex (around £15 and there's enough in one can to do a whole house). Job done.

Pugworld · 13/05/2019 09:21

Cross-posted. definitely call pest control again. They do sometimes take a while to die though.

Houseworkavoider · 13/05/2019 09:25

When my cat had fleas we treated her and the vet told us to let her into every room in the house -she isn’t usually let upstairs.
He said that the fleas would jump onto her and then die.
We also got this and it worked really well.

Flea eggs can lay dormant until the conditions are right for hatching, normally when its warm. Agree indorex is the best home remedy i have found after years of cats and dogs in the house (animal lover...apart from their pets as we call them LOL)
only solution i have found is to treat the infected animals and hoover every day until you havent seen any for a while.

MereDintofPandiculation · 13/05/2019 09:35

Can it be the hatched out stage of woodworm? No, woodworm are beetle larvae. The back legs of this creature tell you it's a jumping animal.

We once moved into a rental property which was full of fleas. I used to walk round the edge of all the rooms when we got in from work carrying a bowl of soapy water, and as the fleas leaped out on to my legs I picked them off and dropped them in the water. The numbers I caught dropped rapidly over the first few days, and it wasn't long before we were completely clear.

SoupDragon · 13/05/2019 09:40

I agree with flea, Indorex and "treat the cat and let her mop up all the fleas"

I still fondly remember the great Fleamageddon of 2010....

lozengeoflove · 13/05/2019 09:52

Thank you for posting, everyone. I can just about cope with fleas - will get the house fumigated again and will get Indorex.
But please, please, tell me it’s definitely NOT lice Sad

I think it’s too big to be a flea and is more likely a weevil - do you have any open bags of flour or birdseed? If so, bin them and disinfect the cupboards and that should be the end of it.

SoupDragon · 13/05/2019 09:58

I don't think it's too big to be a flea. I've seen them in all sorts of sizes.

Arriving home from a 2 week holiday to discover that 1) Frontline was ineffective and 2) the whole house had hatched was definitely a learning experience.
