Redundancy-which offer would you take?

We are having a disagreement.

The offer is redundancy with a £5k payout on the 1st of June.
Or
A different role, same pay as you have now but a better job.

Which would you take?

If you take the job does the redundancy package terms remain or do you start anew.

NauseousMum · 12/05/2019 21:19

Often if you take redundancy, they will claw it back if you get another role in the same company within a certain period of time.

What is the reason for redundancy? How do you know this other job is any safer? You must make sure to have continuous service if you take it

CloserIAm2Fine · 12/05/2019 21:24

£5k is about three months salary for me, I would definitely take the job. I don’t have a partner so no other income in the household to fall back on, and virtually no savings. I’d always opt for security!

But if you have a partner with sufficient income to support your family, and/or a decent amount in savings then you may well feel that the lump sum is more important. It’s impossible to know just from the figures, as your own circumstances affect the decision so much.

Job.

GabsAlot · 12/05/2019 21:32

5k is 2 months for dh-not enough at all

take the job

MatthewBramble · 12/05/2019 21:44

Job. If it were £50K you might have a real choice but not at £5K.

NCwhatevs · 12/05/2019 22:01

Take the job. I have a bit of a niche speciality so I thought I’d fall on my feet and haven’t, the redundancy money is long gone and it was a lot more than you’ve been offered! It’s a really strange job market presently, even the recruiters are saying so. Brexit most likely. People are battening down the hatches and staying put and there is no movement like most years. For just £5k and no similar employment around no way would I take the money!

Eistigi · 13/05/2019 09:29

I was in a similar situation last year, choice of redundancy or a transfer to another role. My redundancy package was lot more, but job security was more important. I'm in a particularly specialist role so getting another job is not too easy. The money is tempting but in the long run a steady income is better, for me anyway!

missbattenburg · 13/05/2019 09:48

The job. £5k will be gone far, far too quickly.

Joey7t8 · 13/05/2019 09:53

Take the money. If you’re good enough, you’ll get another job elsewhere doing something similar.

This is like Bullseye where they have to decide to gamble their prizes/cash against the of winning a speedboat if they can score 101 or more with 6 darts, isn’t it?

sansou · 13/05/2019 09:58

Job - £5K would last 2 months at a push.
