To think there's no way you can't dodge a stomach bug your DC has?

DS (5) started with V bug Friday night, still not well but only one V today. I've tried my best to keep everything bleached, hot washed and contained (all V caught in bin linered receptacle ready prepared for such occasions!)

AIBU to hope me, DH and other DS can escape this horror?! I'm pretty much frazzled and can't bear the thought of the rest of us getting it. I need positive stories! (Even for some false hope!)

I sprayed everything repeatedly with dettol spray over and over again...and again. Wash my hands repeatedly and anything contaminated went straight in the wash. Neither me or DH got it.

ItsJustASimpleLine · 12/05/2019 20:59

Oh and a few prayers to God (or whoever you would ask for help) that you dont get it!

user1493413286 · 12/05/2019 21:03

My DD had one recently and would only settle in bed with me but I managed not to catch it

JurassicGirl · 12/05/2019 21:05

Yes & no!

My house is just coming out of the hell that is a sickness bug!!!

It started on Friday 3rd & worked through all 3 dc & dh (who needed antiemetics) dd & youngest ds will still be home from school tmrw as not past the 48 hr rule yet.

So far.......I haven't caught it!!

Lots of cleaning & windows wide open & keeping my fingers firmly crossed!

spaniorita · 12/05/2019 21:11

Seconding @newjobnerves - antibacterial stuff does bugger all for viruses 🦠 you need plenty of bleach and there's a good anti viral hand foam from boots which will help.

featherflight · 12/05/2019 21:14

You definitely can avoid this!
Lots of handwashing, honestly all the time whilst they're ill. Don't eat with your hands, use cutlery only. Try not to touch your face / mouth / nose as much as possible.

Antibacterial spray and wipes: use them all over the bathroom, any handles, doors, surfaces that have been used by your DS.

Don't share towels.

Vomiting bugs are often spread due to person to person contact, but also often from contaminated objects. Hygiene is key!

floraloctopus · 12/05/2019 21:16

You can easily escape it, my youngest had one recently and I was cleaning up both D&V for several days but nobody else in the house got it.

puma84 · 12/05/2019 21:22

7 of us here. Everyone's had the d&v bug except me. Last person to have it was Tuesday so I'm keeping my fingers crossed.

Merename · 12/05/2019 21:22

Oh god, the horror of waiting to see if you will get it is worse than the actual bug imo! I think it also depends a bit on whether you are someone who catches everything or not, I am and usually catch everything from DC’s, but DH less often. Hope you manage to swerve it...

Onceuponacheesecake · 12/05/2019 21:26

I've also never caught a stomach bug from my kids, or anyone since I was 7 for that matter. I think some people are more susceptible to these things OP, regardless of how hygienic you are

AlphaJura · 12/05/2019 21:28

I quite often catch coughs and colds if they have them but it's more rare for me to catch stomach bugs they have. I just don't seem susceptible to them. And I always do the cleaning up. There have been stomach bugs that only one of them has picked up but not the others. I can think of only one time where we were all being sick at once. It wasn't pleasant.

Titsywoo · 12/05/2019 21:30

I never catch stomach bugs from my kids. I've only ever caught them from other adults.

whitehalleve · 13/05/2019 06:58

I've been dodging one the rest of the family has for the past two weeks.

IAmTheChosenOne · 13/05/2019 07:00

Ive never caught a stomach bug anyone else has had

thatmustbenigelwiththebrie · 13/05/2019 07:06

Genuine question - how does anti bac spray help? I thought stomach bugs were viruses?

CherryPavlova · 13/05/2019 07:09

The best way to prevent cross infection is good hand hygiene. Hand-washing and drying using soap and warm water is the single most effective method of preventing transmission.

newjobnerves · 13/05/2019 08:03

@thatmustbenigelwiththebrie it doesn't!

Strugglingtodomybest · 13/05/2019 08:13

As the poster above said, they don't help, and I think it's worth repeating as antibacs shouldn't be used like this.

I'm going to sound smug now, but none of us (4) have had a bad stomach bug. DS1 was sent home in about year 1 after vomiting at school, but that was it, no further vomiting, so I'm not sure what that was.
I put it down to lots of germs early in life to build up resistance (I don't like cleaning!). Anti-bac anything is also banned in our house and the kids drink Actimel or Yalkult every day (not sure if it helps but thought it was worth a mention).

User8888888 · 13/05/2019 08:30

We had two bugs in the new year. One went through the house (v bad week !) the other didn’t. We didn’t do anything different as far as I can tell but a bought the first bug in and my daughter the second one so that might have made a difference.

LittleCandle · 13/05/2019 08:33

DD1, who has the shittest immune system on the planet, managed not to catch the dreadful stomach bug that floored DGD for a full week, so it can be done.

ASnowballsChance · 13/05/2019 08:35

Thanks for all your posts - interesting that the majority are positive! DS is a bit brighter today and we are still ok. I don't think I will breathe easy until the weekend though!

I have MS, the only thing I fear currently is vomiting bugs. It's dreadful if I get one (I'll spare you TMI) and the recovery time is soooooo slowww. My dd has had fair few over the years and I have dodged 90% of them despite being as close to the events as is possible to get.

notenoughbottletonight · 13/05/2019 08:44

My DD started vomiting last night :( don't want to speak to soon but I've managed to escape one for the last five years. Lucky really as I have a real phobia of being sick. I'm hoping we escape this one too... Fingers crossed you do, it is possible

NeverSayFreelance · 13/05/2019 09:10

I seem to catch every bug going but my mum (when I lived with her) and now my DP never seem to catch them from me. No idea how!
