To use a natural contraception app in 40s

Just that really. Periods regular and on time. It's an app on the phone which gives safe days for sex after tracking your cycle a few times.

i was on the mini pill but didn't agree, also have extensive pelvic adhesions (mainly on one side though) due to previous surgery so GP says fertility probably low anyway- along with my age (43)

unsure as to using it though due to age and possibility of odd cycles etc. Been advised not to get pregnant again due to many surgeries and abdominal scarring.

Famous last words. At your exact age my periods were like clockwork. Then literally overnight, peri-menopause kicked in and my cycle went haywire. If you really really don't want to risk pregnancy, I wouldn't depend on an app.

I didn't have to worry because I had already had my tubes tied. Have you considered doing that?

user87382294757 · 12/05/2019 17:43

Thanks Aqua- don't think they would be able to do that due to the previous surgery and adhesions. they have said no more surgery.

I have tried Mirena, copper coil (but now womb all retroverted etc due to surgery and don'w want to risk another insertion) DH not keen on the snip.

Yes worry about that too, and also got pregnant very quick in the past (have 2 DC already). tricky.

Just checked online and surgeons definitely said no keyhole in future only open surgery, and wouldn't fancy that. Especially as would have to cut all the adhesions etc.

Does your DH wear a condom?

To be fair if you are having difficulty finding contraception and your health is put in danger if pregnant again I think your DH should consider a snip

JacquesHammer · 12/05/2019 17:49

YWBU if pregnancy would be a disaster

Aquamarine1029 · 12/05/2019 18:06

I think your DH is being a selfish twat. A vasectomy is a very simple procedure and would solve all your problems. Why are YOU the only one who has to suffer with all this shit? Carrying and birthing his children and then dealing with endless forms of birth control isn't enough? I would be furious with him, to be honest.

user87382294757 · 12/05/2019 18:09

Yes, we use condoms. Extra safe ones. Also i do resent the not having the snip bit, especially when I have been through so much with childbirth and surgeries. Hence we don't have much atm.

Yes, also the gynae doc is concerned about me using the pill as have had small bowel removed so not sure if would be absorbed properly, and did not recommend the jab as due to vitamins and osteoporosis or something. So yes am stuffed basically with options. So, it is condoms or the snip for him, or no sex.

I really wouldn't rely on the apps. They are constantly in the news for failing on huge levels. They are built based on a specific cycle and while it works for women whose cycles are that perfect; it doesn't work for a lot of women.

If getting pregnancy would be a nightmare, they aren't really an option.

user87382294757 · 12/05/2019 18:14

OK- thanks.

Diaghphram & spermicide, as well as the app?
Is DH equally as not keen on condoms, or abstinence?

Roomba · 12/05/2019 18:18

My children's half siblings are both due to the use of fertility apps aged 40+! More info than I ever wanted to know, but I now know never to use such things if I definitely don't want another baby.

Notreallyhappy · 12/05/2019 18:21

My friend used one....child is 3 😬😂

Condoms or no way.. you oh needs a word with himself mine is 57 & uses condoms

iolaus · 12/05/2019 18:21

If it's the absorption issue of the pill would the patch be an option - it's what I used due to absorption issues with the pill

I'll be honest I wouldn't use natural family planning (including with an app) unless I didn't really mind that much if I conceived - so I may have used it in a 'we don't want another child at the moment, but we probably will in a few years' but not in a 'the world will end if I get pregnant) - especially as you approach menopause your cycles would go wonky (plus the only time I really want sex is the time when I'm fertile anyway so wouldn't have the self control)

theboomtownrat · 12/05/2019 18:24

I use natural cycles... you enter your temperature every morning and it prompts you to take LH tests to pinpoint ovulation. Much more reliable than the free ones and it is actually a certified contraceptive.
I used one of the free apps and fell pregnant whilst in it. Unfortunately it turned out to be ectopic. The science behind the natural cycles app is very effective

givemesteel · 12/05/2019 18:28

There is that machine called Ladycomp I think which takes your basal body temp to tell you if fertile. Have data on thousands of women, meant to be as safe as other forms of contraception in terms of failure rates. Should be better than a fertility app if you want to look for natural contraception options.
