To think that recycling is a piece of nonsense and a money spinner?

For context, the Council have just delivered yet another big plastic monstrosity to everyone in the area. Apparently you can put certain things in it but for tins and bottles you need to wash the items and take the labels off first. Someone mentioned on the local Facebook group that she had seen the refuse collectors putting different types of rubbish in the back of the same truck. Are we being conned? Is everything going to the same landfill site? Really interested to know if anyone has any inside knowledge.

In most places they recycle and do general waste on alternate weeks. Not sure how they could be putting it all in together. Hmm

There are issues with recycling. It’s not the main solution to the crisis but it helps.

The thing about recycling being sent to Africa is correct - there is a huge site in Ghana (where people live) that is now filled with many electrical items that we here have put in the electric recycling bins.

Some of the companies that take the recyclables that the U.K. is not set up to recycle, eg crisp packets, actually send those to the US - so then you have the issue of which is better in terms of carbon footprint.

But does that mean we shouldn’t try? Of course not. As civilians there are few things we can do but we have to do them, especially whilst governments and businesses do not. Zero waste as much as possible, recycle what we can, cut down on use of cars etc.

It’s not a foolproof system yet but it’s currently the only one we’ve got.
