To want some of your spider deterrents?

I’m in a house built 5 years ago and been here for 3 months. The garden has a small car park behind it, a row of nice trees then a very large field behind that and this is the issue I imagine where the wildlife comes from!

Spiders of the average (small) size I can handle generally but in the last month we have been invaded by some big fat huge spiders of an unbelievable size. Last night I was sitting watching TV and the biggest and fastest one I’ve ever seen flew across the rug in front of me. I did get it out of the house but I had to use a broom and now it’s still in the garden so hasn’t gone very far and will come back

My DC absolutely hate the very big ones, are very phobic and get upset. I know they are supposed to be good for flies etc but all I currently have are aggressive queen wasps and giant spiders! I’ve tried putting peppermint and vinegar down as a deterrent, the house is quite clean and I’ve taken down some cobwebs from outside

The electronic pest boxes are £10-20 and I don’t want to waste money on one if they don’t work? Any fellow phobics who have got any useful suggestions?

Conkers! In the corners of your rooms

NineinaBed · 12/05/2019 07:56

I spray peppermint oil anywhere I think I spider could come in. They also don't like vinegar but peppermint smells nicer. My parents and aunt place conkers next to the front and back doors. They are convinced it keeps the spiders out I'm not so sure lol.

CherryPavlova · 12/05/2019 07:58

Conkers.

shouldwestayorshouldwego · 12/05/2019 07:59

Cats! Rarely see spiders since getting cats.

JellyNo15 · 12/05/2019 07:59

Indoorex anti flea spray. I buy two cans at a time from Amazon. Spray all around skirting boards and door and windows as I leave the room i use it like you would an air freshner. Do the whole house. I do this three times a year. The only spiders I have come acrosz are already dead but that's only a couple in several years. I have a really bad phobia so I understand.

pilates · 12/05/2019 08:00

Yep conkers

Giantsbane · 12/05/2019 08:01

I tried conkers and peppermint oil this year. I've had way fewer spiders but I think it's the oil and in two places my conkers are covered in cobwebs 😂

HBStowe · 12/05/2019 08:02

My cat eats them, which is disgusting but nonetheless appreciated.

Pinkywoo · 12/05/2019 08:03

Rosemary. We kept getting enormous ones in the bathroom and worked out that were coming in through the air brick behind the bath. When I put my rosemary bush in a pot in front of the outside of the brick (completely by chance) they stopped appearing!

PookieDo · 12/05/2019 08:13

I have a cat so no poison of any kind or sprays
Cat was not going to eat this thing - it thought about it and touched it but didn’t like the look of it at all!
So the cat is no use

So I need to find some Conkers. Don’t they go mouldy? I don’t want mouldy conkers either 😂

OK then - a different cat. Get a new sleek hunting machine cat that slays massive spiders and shames your existing cat into action eating the ones she misses.

Villanellesproudmum · 12/05/2019 09:28

Agree Indorex, you’ll never see a spider again.

Villanellesproudmum · 12/05/2019 09:29

It’s car friendly and will also benefit your cat.

Villanellesproudmum · 12/05/2019 09:29

*cat although you could use the car I guess

Heymummee · 12/05/2019 09:30

Conkers on the windowsills and hidden in the corners of rooms helped us. Ours didn’t go mouldy. I took photos of where I had put them in case I forgot when I wanted to remove them!

AnotherMum76 · 12/05/2019 09:37

Conkers don't go mouldy, they just kinda shrivel up a bit but you won't get them this time of year unfortunately. Peppermint spray is the next best thing. You can buy a spray on Amazon called 'no more spiders' or make your own

Langrish · 12/05/2019 09:40

Please don’t use flea spray as someone suggested. Completely understand you don’t want them as visible housemates but they’re brilliant creatures and we’d be in trouble without them.
Moths hate lavender oil, don’t know if it would deter spiders?

PookieDo · 12/05/2019 11:05

Yeah I don’t want to kill anything I just prefer they stay on the outside of my house Grin

I’ve tried peppermint but it’s not really helping. Can’t find conkers!

RubyTrees · 12/05/2019 11:55

Some spiders can be very helpful!

If you notice the spindly kind (Daddy long legs), leave them be, they will get rid of other bigger/fatter spiders and insects in your house.

PookieDo · 12/05/2019 12:18

This spider was so big and so fast I am still traumatised a bit 😂 I can handle ‘normal’ ones

OP posts:
Bbang · 12/05/2019 12:21

I am extremely phobic, to the point I have panic attacks over spiders. It is seriously debilitating and embarrassing. Indorex flea spray, only ones I ever find now are dead and I’m very glad of that.

LloydColeandtheCoconuts · 12/05/2019 12:24

I agree with conkers. The day the conkers were thrown away my cleaner did it Grin two spiders appeared. Coincidence? I think not! Might be a bit early for them this year. You'll have to wait until September now.

TheCanyon · 12/05/2019 12:27

Flea bombs are the way to go.

Poppy43 · 12/05/2019 12:53

I used indorex a few years back for a flea problem and I don't think I seen a single spider afterwards.

FissionChips · 12/05/2019 12:55

Dethlac. It’s the best stuff I’ve ever used, it lasts a couple of months and acts as a deterrent as well as killing them should they touch where it’s been sprayed.
