To ask if Rock Choir is worth joining?

I am seeing them everywhere: Edinburgh Fringe and many local festivals among others. Looks such fun and being moderately musical (play several instruments and can hold a tune - in the shower at least) I am considering joining my local group.

Just wondering if there are any members on here who can share their experiences. How much time does it take up, do you travel much etc. And whether it is easy to combine with a busy life!

TIA Smile

Hmm. This is a much more reasoned response than I got when I asked. I got the piss totally ripped out of me here for considering Rock Choir. I never did go...

Try it OP. You get a free taster, if you don’t like it then you’ve lost nothing!

I’m in a local gospel choir and it’s totally uplifting - really friendly, take all abilities but it’s still challenging, and we sound amazing! I looked into Rock Choir but thought my local one sounded a bit lacklustre.

asparalite · 11/05/2019 19:23

I think if you are musical that you would most likely find the slow pace very frustrating.
Our group leader was amazing and very motivating but I disliked the cliquey nature of the people who went there so didn't stay for long, also very expensive!

RandomMess · 11/05/2019 19:24

Usually local community choirs exist that you can join.

RollaCola84 · 11/05/2019 19:27

I've recently joined and I love it. I did a lot of music related activities when I was in school and uni and can still sort of read music so sometimes I would like to see the arrangements rather than learn by ear.

stucknoue · 11/05/2019 19:27

There's a lot of different choirs of which the franchised rock choir is one. It's commercial and as a franchise does vary of course. Try it out and other independent offerings and see what you think

emotionalaffair · 11/05/2019 19:29

It was far too slow for me as I can read music.

I found it welcoming, inclusive and a good way of making friends as I has relocated. I found it non competitive. You don't have to perform. At the moment I just go along to rehersals for a good old sing.

stucknoue · 11/05/2019 19:30

Ps dd belongs to 3 choirs, none are rock choir, she loves them!

Watsername · 11/05/2019 19:54

I haven't been to Rock Choir but am a member of another similar, but cheaper, choir. I LOVE it! So much fun and have made many new friends.

MsMcMurphy · 12/05/2019 06:27

Thank you! Such interesting responses. I think on balance I will def give it a try it as pps' experiences seem to vary and many recommend it as a bit of craic.

But my underlying impression is that it might be a bit franchise-like and what with me being musically trained, a bit too amateurish..? £10 a session seems crazy though. Does that include
The t-shirt and coffee?

pigsDOfly · 12/05/2019 10:04

No it doesn't include the t shirt, and no coffee.

flowery · 12/05/2019 10:11

I’m a musician as well. I do find it very easy but I don’t go to choir for a musical challenge! I have plenty of other challenges in my life, I go to de-stress and relax and have fun.

The fee includes the rehearsal sessions and virtually all the performance opportunities as well.
