to ask did Levothyroxine affect your cycle?

My cycle is normally between 28-32 days but always get my period 14 days past ovulation, like clockwork. I am currently 16dpo & have several negative pregnancy tests, though a few squinters a week ago we could only see when a pic of the test was inverted. They have now gone 🤷

Started levothyroxine this month, 25mcg.

Have I had another very early chemical pregnancy/dodgy egg (this would be like the 7th month in a row of a few squinters, then nothing, which tbh is what made me get my TSH tested) or can Levothyroxine mess with your cycle?

Has Levothyroxine messed up anyone else's cycle? Even with previous chemical pregnancies I always got my period 14dpo.

It can definitely mess with your cycle, but I don't really know how it works - for me, I didn't ovulate until I started taking it.. probably worth a chat with your doctor, mine

CheesePuffTheMagicDragon · 11/05/2019 17:36

Sorry, dropped my phone! 🙄 my doctor agreed that it would affect my fertility - but positively! Good luck

chipsandpeas · 11/05/2019 17:38

from memory it didnt affect mine when i started taking it but i wasnt monitoring my cycle,10 years on im 26-28 days

If you have an underactive thyroid technically you may struggle to conceive and you are more likely to miscarry - but I conceived both mine first month of trying on a 26-28 day cycle having sex every other day from day 12 - it worked both times and I've never had a miscarriage.

What my doctor did do was as soon as I knew I was pregnant he increased my dosage. 25 seems very low even to start off with.

It's not unusual for even those with a normal cycle to have cycles that vary month to month.

Sorry should have said, I have Hashimotos, my tsh was 5.8 and they're trying to get it under 2.5 for ttc. It took us over 12yrs to concieve our son (now almost 2) and with hindsight the only anomally on my medical records was that a month before I concieved him my tsh dropped to 1.2 naturally for some unknown reason (looking back probably because I was doing Keto which is mostly a gluten free diet and gluten can make hashimotos worse). They always said I was borderline so they wouldn't treat it before now when I went private at Spire.

So I researched a few weeks ago and found out when ttc that TSH should be below 2.5 and if you have antibodies it can make it harder. So I pushed for more thyroid tests and I was positive for antibodies and my tsh had gone way high again. My Endo at Spire started me on 25mcg as my tsh had dropped to 3.8 on it's own again and that's the starting dose for getting your tsh lower for ttc at the clinics here.

They will up it to 50mcg at my next appt in a few weeks if my TSH hasnt dropped to around 1-1.5.

Hi OP.
I have Hashis. I was diagnosed when ttc, too. Never noticed changes to cycle, though.

25mcg seems rather low to get you under 2 TSH at any pace. I was started on 50 and then raised to 100 when pregnant.

Good luck - it was a revelation to feel better once the levothyroxine kicked in!

sweeneytoddsrazor · 11/05/2019 18:45

It definitely affected mine but in a very positive way. Became more regular and not the absolutely horrendous week of not being able to be more than 20-30 mins without changing tampon and pad after about 2-3 months of no show whatsoever. Never any question of pregnancy as was steralised by then. Makes you feel so much better in so many other aspects as well

phlebasconsidered · 11/05/2019 18:56

My cycle was almost constant bleeding! I have Hashimotos and my TSH was 250 at diagnosis. The scale stops there, it might have been higher! T4 was 0.

Took 3 years to control. I take 350mg T4 and 40mg T3 now. My periods are regular when correctly medicated ( I need a tsh of 0 and a t4 of 14 plus). Menopause has screwed them right up though, and my dosage too.

Mines remained the same ,

Just got my period as soon as I sent my last post 🙈 always the bloody way! (No pun intended)

It's much lighter than usual already so hopefully the levothyroxine and gf diet is working 🤞

@phlebasconsidered isn't that Ord's not Hashi's? Similar but with Hashi's you can swing from hypo to hyper (Graves) and up and down the immune scale? With Ords your thyroid just gives up totally I think.

Since starting Levo 11 years ago my cycle has shortened to 25 days to the minute and it is exceptionally light and lasts 1-2 days. I am 41.

MRex · 11/05/2019 21:14

No difference for me. You might need a higher dose if you're trying to get pregnant, and make sure you get retested a lot early in the pregnancy, my thyroid went a bit mad in about week 9 but I wasn't due for retesting until week 16 and tried holding off until week 14, which wasn't a good idea as I just got more ill. Hope you don't have to wait too long until you have to concern yourself about that, good luck.

Levothyroxine was great for me. I used to have very painful PMS symptoms, and a crampy 7 day period, and a very short cycle.
Once I started on Levothyroxine, periods were a more normal 4-5 days, PMS and cramps cleared up. And once I stabilised on the dose, fell pregnant.
I started on 50mcg, and GP had me do blood tests every 4-6 weeks until she thought the levels had stabilised.

Littledinosaur · 11/05/2019 21:16

My TSH was 4ish, started 25mg of thyroxine and got pregnant 3 weeks later (after 3 years of trying). Didn’t test positive until a couple of days after my period was due so I assumed the thyroxine had messed my cycle up! Good luck
