To ask for your printer recommendations (wireless?)

Our printer broke down months ago and I've been procrastinating ever since over a replacement as I've not a clue where to start! I've got round it so far by printing stuff at work but after a melt down from DD who forgot she needed some homework printed for Monday (a totally different AIBU), I really need to get on the case!

Was wondering about wireless as fancy the idea of clicking print on my phone from the comfort of my sofa but not sure how reliable they are?

Any recommendations for a reasonably priced & reliable home printer? Mostly for printing homework and family stuff.

Many thanks!

You will never look back! We have a canon something. Dead cheap because they make the money back on the ink.

Just ordered a Brother wireless laser printer. I don't need colour printing and I hope it will be cheap to run.

SpoonBlender · 11/05/2019 13:58

I'm still running an ancient HP Laserjet 5N from the 90s, so can't suggest. But for anyone who does - it's no use saying "canon something" or "a Brother" - give the model! It's important!

what is your budget OP? Will you be printing much colour stuff/graphics/photos or mainly word docs, black and white etc.?

ilovesooty · 11/05/2019 14:10

I think mine is the Brother HL2010W - it's only £62 on Amazon anyway.

we have a canon pixima and it's great. ink lasts ages

Don't really want spend more than about £100, £150 at a push. Sometimes the DC's homework contains photos but otherwise just printing text, email confirmations etc.

I have an Epson ET-2650 (I think) that was about £150 about 6-12 months ago, so probably cheaper now. It's fast and very cheap to use, as rather than printer cartridges you refill tanks using bottles of ink, at about £10 per bottle. I am on my 2nd bottle of black, and my first of yellow, magenta and cyan - i use it daily to print work docs out, think you are supposed to be able to get 3500 pages from bottle of ink. It is very easy to use wirelessly and in fact I printed a load of stuff for my partner's business when I was on holiday, and it printed as quickly as if I had been in the room.

The only thing I would say is it's not a photo quality printer, the results on photos are okay, but I prefer to get photos printed by Jessops or Boots etc anyway as it's cheaper and the results better and longer lasting

We have a Canon. It's fine, was v cheap but you have to buy authentic ink cartridges because (I think I'm right in saying) they have a chip in them so the printer can't be fooled. DH bought a budget replacement and the printer refused to talk to the laptop about ink levels.

Jebuschristchocolatebar · 11/05/2019 20:12

We have a cannon ts1500 or something like that. Cheap to buy and easy to set up. I get our cartridges locally refilled so the printer still thinks they are the real deal.

HP OfficeJet 250. Not cheap but it's portable, lightweight and lightning fast. It can also scan and photocopy.

filka · 11/05/2019 20:21

Its outside your budget, but HP Colour LaserJet Pro MFP M281fdw Wireless Multifunction Printer with Fax, £231 on Amazon.
Why?

  • Wireless
  • Colour
  • Laser, not ink (you don't need HP original toner refills)
  • Scanner (with document feeder)
  • Double-sided printing
Can print from phone (I have the M277, my kids do this)

I have a black and white only, but you can get them in color, Samsung m2020 laser printer. It's tiny, fast (about 12 pages a minute), really economical on toner ink, and can print either using nfc or wireless. Best buy ever. Toner cartridges about £45, which it says you can get 1000 pages of text from, I'm not sure how many I get, but over 500 every time. I'd never go back to those horrendously expensive tiny cartridges now. May be worth a look if you can sacrifice the color.

I’ve got an HP Envy 4524. It’s a couple of years old so may have been replaced with a newer model number. It’s really good though, it’s wireless and also prints double sided which is handy. I use mine with HP instant ink, but you don’t have to use it that way. Would definitely recommend. Was no more than about £50.
