Does anyone else get this symptom??

ciaobellabella · 10/05/2019 23:53

I’ve had recurrent UTIs for the past 2 years - the only thing that has helped has been taking an anti biotic a night for over a year but I think GP is keen to stop that if possible so I don’t think it’s a long term solution (unless anyone has had antibiotics long term??)

Although at the moment the antibiotics are keeping me UTI free, I occasionally get a weird thing that I can only really describe as urethral pain. It will happen after I pee - not during, the peeing isn’t sore but a couple of minutes later I get this uncomfortable sensation, a slight soreness. I try and ignore it and it always goes away completely after about 15 minutes.

Sometimes after sex as well I will feel sore, almost like a UTI for a few hours afterwards and then it goes away. This probably sounds stupid but I’ve wondered if it’s actually my vagina but the fact pee affects it makes me think it must be urethral?

It tends to be worse when I know I haven’t drank very much, I’ve drank alcohol or I haven’t been peed for a while. So that makes me think is it possible I’ve got a sort of easily irritated urethra and any time my pee is a bit strong I get this feeling? Perhaps due to the many UTIs I have had?

Does anyone else get this?

I am seeing my GP again soon, I have been referred to a Urologist for further tests (I’ve already had a clear ultrasound the other month) and I have mentioned it but he didn’t seem that concerned by it unless it ends up turning into a full blown UTI.

I could’ve written this post myself. I find it’s worse when I’ve been at work all day.

Mind if I follow the thread?

Cautionsharpblade · 11/05/2019 00:52

Is it like a tensing sensation? Like a slight cramp or spasm? I often get it, having been very prone to UTIs for years. I even get the feeling if I think about a UTI

I took antibiotics after sex regularly, a urologist told me recurrent infections often ‘burn themselves out’ and this is what happened. I guess a lack of sex helped too. My top tip is to ditch oral sex

spottyandsad · 11/05/2019 01:15

@Cautionsharpblade i take it you mean receiving? i've never thought that that could be a cause!

Cautionsharpblade · 11/05/2019 01:21

Yes that’s what I mean - mouths are full of bacteria. I can’t bear oral sex anyway and putting a stop to it really made a difference to the UTIs that I was getting every week

Bettyspants · 11/05/2019 01:25

Yes some patients are permanently on a reduced dose antibiotic as prophylaxis. However its not ideal in the age of antibiotic resistance! I tend to only do this in older people with recurrent UTIs , when everything else is excluded. Younger patients aren't common in my experience and will usually have a connected long term health problem.

It's great you've been referred to a urologist, your symptoms have been described to me before! The specialist is absolutely the best person to advise you and do further investigations. It would be helpful if your GP could arrange an ultrasound before you are reviewed. I hope you improve soon, it sounds miserable!

Sorry missed your last paragraph re ultrasound! I'd also recommend a check up at the GUM clinic , just incase!

Oliversmumsarmy · 11/05/2019 01:31

Dp has antibiotics daily because he has no spleen.
I questioned whether it would make him antibiotic resistant but apparently as he has no spleen then the antibiotics probably wouldn’t work anyway

Lweji · 11/05/2019 01:44

People don't get antibiotic resistant. Bacteria do.

The main risk is if the person doesn't take the dose daily. Antibiotic pressure must be kept fairly constant.

TheSandgroper · 11/05/2019 02:40

The sex bit won't apply here but when dd was smaller, if she didn't have a big drink of water when she came home from school, she would scream with pain when urinating at about 9 pm. Panadol, a litre of water, perhaps a little bicarb and two more trips to the toilet to wash all that water through and she would sleep again. It was all about timing and volume.

We never did get to a proper uti, thank God. But this behaviour was regular enough to be predictable and preventable. She's older now so has learnt and is able to manage herself.

ciaobellabella · 11/05/2019 07:54

caution yes I’d say sometimes like a ‘pulling’ sensation but then sometimes generally a bit sore (like ice or heat could help!)

ciaobellabella · 11/05/2019 07:55

lweji apparently the last UTI I had was resistant to one antibiotic so now I’m on another but I’m worried I’ll be running out of options!

Funnily enough I only got that mentioned resistant UTI after I had reduced the dose to only one after sex and after a few weeks I got a UTI again!

betty interesting re: GUM, as I’ve been with DP 2 years and the problems started then but at first we were using condoms, both got tested (after I had first UTI) and both were clear but the issues continued. It’s like I’m allergic to him!!

OP posts:
ciaobellabella · 11/05/2019 07:59

captain yes work is a factor for me which makes me think is it dehydration, caffeine, stress?!

OP posts:
Lweji · 11/05/2019 08:04

I'm not surprised.

Are you having sex with the same person or different people?

It looks like you should only have sex with condoms and keep it to PIV only (I'm assuming it's with men). Plus insist on him having a good wash, including hands.
If the same person, then it could be a good idea for both of you to attend the GP together and for them to also take antibiotics or have a swab for drug resistant bacteria.

Lweji · 11/05/2019 08:08

And if you're not doing it already, drink plenty of water and cranberry juice regularly.

Stress can affect the immune system, though. If you associate the worst with work, could you talk to your supervisor and have more frequent breaks for example?

ciaobellabella · 11/05/2019 08:09

Lweji same partner for 2 years, living together. Interestingly there’s never been a suggestion it could be worth giving him antibiotics or testing him for bacteria as I’m sure I was told it’s my own bacteria causing it but thinking logically it could be him?

I have thought about sticking to condoms but then I got my first, awful UTI back when him and I exclusively used condoms so I presumed it wouldn’t help! I guess we may have to though if antibiotics aren’t a long term option... I’m on the implant so it’s nice not having to think about it!!

Yes I know what you mean. I have had a lifetime of utis and utheral pressure/pain that has got worse as I have hit the perimenopause. Interstitial cystitis was suggested by the urologist I saw. There is also a lot of interesting work being done by a guy called James Mallone in London who thinks a lot if it is embedded infection. There are a lot of women suffering. I have joined some interstitial cystitis Facebook groups. Im not sure if they help. It seems to me that there isn't really an answer, but they do give you more ideas of things to try..I also avoid oral sex now, I keep uktra clean, change underwear, take d-mannose and probiotics. Don't drink alcohol or caffeine, and try to avoid spicy food and tomatoes. I think I'm allergic to my husband too!

Lweji · 11/05/2019 08:14

Considering how long has been and the association with sex, I'd think it's worth checking all possibilities.
Certainly talk about it with the urologist.

DameSylvieKrin · 11/05/2019 08:16

My MIL got vaccinated against her recurrent UTI. I think they did a culture to see what was causing it. You could ask about that.
It’s been shown that cranberry juice doesn’t help so only drink that if you like it.

ciaobellabella · 11/05/2019 08:17

Lweji thanks - will definitely mention to the Urologist. The ultrasounds showed nothing untoward but I suppose an ultrasound doesn’t explore everything!

DameSylvieKrin · 11/05/2019 08:19

Also, what sanpro do you use? I has trush and UTIs monthly for two years, then switched to a mooncup and stopped using pads, never had another infection.

ciaobellabella · 11/05/2019 08:24

Dame vaccinated?! That’s amazing. I’ve never heard of that being used. Do you know what the vaccine was for?

OP posts:
ciaobellabella · 11/05/2019 08:26

Dame I am a mooncup convert but occasionally use pads or liners - thinking about it I’m sure I get more of ‘that’ sensation and feel generally UTI-y when I use pads as I just don’t feel clean so I am sure you are right there actually!!!

OP posts:
ciaobellabella · 11/05/2019 08:26

Dame my implant gives me very long light periods (like weeks and weeks) so using a pad or even liner for all that time could irritate things I suppose!

Akire · 11/05/2019 08:27

I’ve had with UTI before. Pain minutes after loo like urethra spasm. You wouldn’t think it could cramp but it does.
