AIBU to think she would have been taken seriously of she was a man?

Advance warning - this is grim and involves maggots. The poor woman returned to the doctor repeatedly and was only believed when her son filmed the maggot coming out of her skin. They diagnosed her with psychosis and moved her son elsewhere without even checking her claims!

I've spent years fighting doctors to take my migraine symptoms seriously so this really resonated with me. AIBU to think she would have fared better if she was male?

YANBU.

Women are much more easily dismissed.

The worse part is that its not like it hasn't happened before :S

There have actually been quite a few cases of Larvae infecting through a wound or spot and most of the times it has been on the head... They should have at least checked it out as it doesn't exactly take a lot to have a look into it.

Sounds like pre 1952 when countless women were diagnosed with 'female hysteria' Hmm

I know that I’ve felt dismissed on occasions and subsequently learned to live with symptoms bothering me - thankfully nothing like this.

It doesn’t seem to affect my dp who doesn’t go to the doctor often but is usually taken seriously and investigated. Incidentally I go much less than him and am still made to feel like a hyperchondriac.

I asked for a blood test in my third trimester outside of the standard ones because I felt so anaemic (I work with HCP’s who advised it as well) and was sent packing. I tested anaemic during my labour and had to have a blood transfusion afterwards because I was so severely anaemic. If I had the balls I would’ve gone back to each dr/midwife who brushed me off and told them the needless trouble that was caused over a poxy blood test and some iron supplements.

It’s frightening really, I’ve mulled over the possibility of having my appendix removed privately because I know of a few cases where women have had their pelvic/abdominal pain dismissed and ended up in real trouble. One very sadly died.

It’s also made me very mistrustful, almost resentful, of HCP’s which isn’t great all round really. I understand that doctors are a lot of worried well but I think that there is almost a reliance on the patient repeatedly presenting themselves to ‘test’ whether there is actually a problem rather than taking their word at face value the first time.

Admittedly a lot of it is down to the patients personal assertiveness but that’s a lot to expect from people who it doesn’t come naturally to. I’ve also come across to many people (particularly elderly) who have had it drummed into them to not make a fuss and the lack of resources who will not seek help even in dire circumstances. Even with the lack of resources it’s sad to see that the NHS is seen as hostile by the very people who need it most.

There was a long running thread on here about not being taken seriously by the medical profession, the stories would make your hair curl.

Invisible Women has a chapter on this as well, it's very good.

Socksontheradiator · 11/05/2019 15:13

That's shocking! Poor woman!
And, I believe you are right that a man would have been taken seriously.

EmeraldShamrock · 11/05/2019 16:17

Omg the poor woman, how disgusting.
OP go to a&e with your migraine, or save hard to pay to see a neurologist.
I lost a really good friend 4 years ago, she used to joke about treating herself to botox to get some pain free days.
She often had to sit on a dark room, she had a massive brain hemorage, they later found she had many trans ischemic attacks for years. To late unfortunately for her, her DH and DD.

IAmTheChosenOne · 11/05/2019 16:21

AIBU to think she would have fared better if she was male?

You have no evidence for that assumption , nor that your migraines would have been more quickly diagnosed if you were a man.

SimonJT · 11/05/2019 16:21

Sadly some doctors are just crap/don’t care, I wasted a year trying to get help with an issue, I gave in and went private in the end.
