Why not just often?

I have never seen oftentimes used in contemporary work, only often. And I am beyond midsummer. So there is your answer. Both. But not so much these days.

ElsieGrote · 11/05/2019 21:50

I keep seeing oftentimes, often. I had never even heard of it until recently but now it seems to be everywhere. Cannot understand why anyone would use such a long word when one short one will do just a well.

It's pretty.

ElsieGrote · 11/05/2019 21:53

Really - what like "oldentimes"?

OP posts:
ElsieGrote · 11/05/2019 21:54

Instead of old

I might use oftentimes for stylistic purposes (e.g. writing some kinds of fiction) but not in general.

Normandy144 · 11/05/2019 22:01

It's common in Canada and the US. I noticed it a lot when i lived there. I think it is just migrating over here thanks to social media etc.

DownStreet · 11/05/2019 22:04

It’s common in the US. I think it’s quite poetic. Sometimes, oftentimes, why not?

ethelfleda · 11/05/2019 22:39

I’ve heard this a lot lately. But only when the person talking is American. I was watching some lectures on my great course plus app the lecturer kept saying it!

ethelfleda · 11/05/2019 22:39

But I also do quite like it..

nocoolnamesleft · 11/05/2019 22:41

I've seen ofttimes used.

GottenGottenGotten · 11/05/2019 22:53

Many, many words have synonyms. Language is much better and more interesting as a result.

In fact, I think I might start using oftentimes more.. you know.. often.

Gigglinghysterically · 11/05/2019 23:03

It's a North American word.

floraloctopus · 11/05/2019 23:06

I've never heard it until this thread.

MajesticWhine · 11/05/2019 23:17

It's just wrong, really.
I sometimes go to the park.
I often go to the park.
I never go to the park

No need for oftentimes

DoreenWinkings · 11/05/2019 23:21

I like it. It's one of those words I enjoy because they're just fabulous words and are pleasurable to say.

I like it too.
It's quaint.

TooLateToDrinkCoffee · 11/05/2019 23:24

The difference between oldentimes and oftentimes is that oldentimes is in the style of the said oldentimes, but oftentimes is not said oftentimes at once, if that makes sense. So the first is justified but the second is just trying to be in vogue.
