Mine does this occasionally so just here to see replies!

Chouetted · 09/05/2019 22:55

Mine does this too - a pause and then an extra strong beat? I've always understood it to be completely normal.

SpotlessMind · 09/05/2019 22:57

It’s not unusual, can happen for lots of reasons that are generally nothing to worry about - look up palpitations on NHS Choices for more info about it and when to seek additional advice about it

Notcontent · 09/05/2019 23:02

Yes, I have had this. It’s not actually skipping a beat - they are called PVCs (you can google this) and it’s an extra heart beat. It’s rather unpleasant and slightly scary (to me at least). I am prone to them when unwell or really tired.

mineofuselessinformation · 09/05/2019 23:02

I have it. It's not your heart missing a beat, just that the next one is a bit delayed. They are called ectopic beats - they can feel very unpleasant!
You need to get them checked out by asking your GP.
The chances are, it's nothing serious. Mine are brought on by feeling stressed or unwell.

Hecateh · 09/05/2019 23:08

It's normal when it happens occasionally.
It's rarely serious
It is one of many symptoms of quite a few things
It can be, for example, a sign of over or underactive thyroid
but lots of other things too
If it carries on when your cold is better it's a good idea to visit the GP, even if they don't follow it up at this stage , if other symptoms kick in later this will already be on record

CrispbuttyNo1 · 09/05/2019 23:23

It's usually absolutely normal. Look up the vagus nerve. It's the longest and biggest nerve in the body and runs right by the heart. Even trapped wind in your tummy can put pressure on the nerve which can then cause a skipped beat.

PookieDo · 09/05/2019 23:25

I get this a lot
I put it down to asthma for ages but GP doesn’t agree. I’ve had a couple of ECG’s all fine. I think asthma meds used to make it worse but when I am tired or have indigestion it can happen
In the past it always triggered a huge panic attack but I am better at ignoring it now

CrispbuttyNo1 · 09/05/2019 23:30

Trapped wind, garlic and any artificial red colourings affece me too. Usually once I have done a huge burp or a fart Blush, they stop as the pressure has gone off the nerve.
I used to get them so often that I had a stethoscope and could listen the trapped wind gurgling around. This helped stop me having panic attacks as I would convince myself that I was going to have a heart attack.

CrispbuttyNo1 · 09/05/2019 23:33

And I have had numerous ecgs too. I have been diagnosed with Supraventricular tachycardia (SVT) but that is for episodes of a very fast heartbeat. The skipped ones are not related to it at all.

TheDarkPassenger · 09/05/2019 23:34

I get this when I’m tired. Takes my breath away!

PookieDo · 09/05/2019 23:35

Mine happens a lot lying on one side and when I am falling asleep. I do think it’s trapped wind a lot of the time

ApplesinmyPocket · 09/05/2019 23:52

I get these, especially when I lie down at night for some reason. I hate that pause and then THUMP!

The good news is that I've had them for over 40 years (am 61) - they haven't progressed to anything worse, in fact I'm pretty fit and active. Had them investigated but nothing wrong apparently.

Hopefully yours are just as harmless, I understand it's very common.

Thankyou for your replies!! Definitely feeling better and it's not doing it today but will defo see a doctor if it happens again xx
