M&S self serve till recordings.....stop now!

Just been to M&S and at the self serve check out there seems to be the most irritating recording of a woman shouting inane comments. Has anyone else heard these? What on earth is it all about? Awful!

Could someone please let me know when they have stopped so that I can resume shopping there, possibly?

Irritating Amanda on mine. Whoever directed her in that voiceover session should have told her to dial the enthusiasm way waaaaay down. It makes me flinch every time.

I've only heard the Ant & Dec comments at my local M&S but they are so loud and really bloody annoying, particularly as I just don't like Ant McPartlin. I would try and mute it but there's a security guard who stands over the self-serve tills watching your every move so I'm scared to. Grin

WeeDangerousSpike · 09/05/2019 14:33

@pinkoneblueone how do you mute?! Is it just m&s ones that can be muted? So many questions! Grin

It was ant and Dec last time I went in our local M&S - who knew self service tills could be even more annoying...

Treefloof · 09/05/2019 14:33

Someone please think of the children and tell me how to mute these dastardly machines.

On a tangent, last time I was in m and s, bought food (obviously) and when I got to the self checkout, a sweet man who worked there asked if he could help at all and i said sure. He then scanned it all, asked how I was paying (gift card) asked if he could do that too, sure, asked if I would like it packed, sure, can I carry it to your car, errr no that's ok. But I would have gone through a normal manned till if anyone had been sitting at one, so what was he doing hanging around self serve?

They are so incredibly annoying - and send my dc with autism over the edge.

Happy to mute them if someone will share how it's done! The Poundland ones especially as we never use the self serve tills at M&S.

Constance1234 · 09/05/2019 14:38

It's very annoying especially the Ant and Dec ones. Do M&S really think all their customers watch this show or care about it?

Butterpup · 09/05/2019 14:41

"They are so incredibly annoying - and send my dc with autism over the edge."
Gingerivy. Do you avoid M&S now?

I always mute it (the volume button on the screen - keep pressing it until it gets to mute) because otherwise I end up swearing out loud at it. I do NOT need to be shouted at by the sodding machine.

Becca19962014 · 09/05/2019 14:54

There's a button on the screen which is the volume control, basically four bars increasing in side. Keep pressing until there's a cross and they're muted (works on ones I've seen so assume they're on all of them).

YANBU. I was quite perturbed when I shopped there and wondered if someone had left a radio on somewhere. Poundland ones were also terrible, but they’ve started speaking in a more ‘normal’ till voice recently. I reckon customers complained.

Gingerivy · 09/05/2019 16:12

Butterpup No because there are specific food items we buy there (two children with autism and food issues). I do, however, use the regular staffed tills at the back of the store, instead of the self serve ones at the front.

The Poundland self serve tills are right next to the staffed tills, so can't avoid them - which has meant we tend to avoid Poundland now.

Gingerivy · 09/05/2019 16:13

Thanks for the info on the mute process - will DEFINITELY be looking for that!
