To holiday in Tunisia

Finances have been very tight this year for unavoidable reasons which lead us to thinking that we wouldn’t be able to afford a family holiday this year. However thanks to some jiggery pokery with our outgoings we have around £2000 for a holiday abroad for 2 adults and 2 children.

Whilst this saving was quite a feat for us, it’s pretty flimsy in terms of a holiday budget that meets our small yet non negotiable criteria:

  • within 3 hour flight from UK
  • within 30 minute airport transfer to hotel
  • all inclusive/full board (3 meals, not fussed with drinks)

After weeks of searching it seems a strong contender that meets the above criteria is Tunisia. But on reading, the country is under significant terror alert. This in itself, while a concern, isn’t necessarily putting me off, as I don’t see it as being vastly different to living in any large uk city.

Am I being deluded? Would you consider holidaying there? If not, any recommendations greatly appreciated Grin.

What's wrong with a 40 minute transfer? Isn't that normal and pretty short?

Would not risk bringing female children to a place where they‘d be exposed to harassment. Statistically the chances of a terror attack are miniscule but the chances of sexual harassment or general street hassling (forced to buy things, made to feel threatened/unsafe) seems like 100% based on all stories here. Especially since the economy has gone down, people are even more desperate to make money from tourists.

Why not Croatia? It has some amazing beaches, clean, safe and much more affordable than the rest of Europe.

My dad has just returned from Tunisia, from the same hotel the terrorists killed people at 3 years ago.
He had a good time and said there was a high security presence everywhere. He's booked to go back in October.

Not sure i would risk it with kids though...

Have you considered a French campsite? When my dc were younger we used to go every summer for two weeks, ferry to Caen then drive to the Vendee area. Most of the sites have good pools with slides. I used to cut the cost by several hundred pounds a year by booking direct with the campsite, most of the sites that have eurocamp tents and vans also rent out their own accommodation. You would be able to do this on your budget. I had to drag up school French to email /book but saved loads.

When my kids were that sort of age we always went to a campsite in Northern Spain on the Costa Brava. Channel tunnel and 2 days driving with an overnight stop in Dijon. My kids are adults now and still remember those camping trips to Spain as the best holidays of their lives.

Not done Tunisia, but have been to Egypt a few times. Taba Heights was lovely with a tiny airport but its closed down now. Last went to Hurgada about 3 years ago... hotel was ok but the airport was hell on earth.

We holidayed in Tunisia before the attacks. I decided I'd never go back. Whilst the hotel was lovely if you went into town you would be hassled from the time you stepped out of the taxi.
.
However we did go by train to a less touristy are and we weren't approached once.

If you decide against Tunisia, have you considered Bulgaria? I've seen some amazingly cheap all inclusive deals on the TUI website. Might be worth a look for you

I don't even understand that comment, let alone the reason for bumping a 2 YO thread.
