AIBU to use AIBU for emergency advice?Wink
Give me some of your best tips, I start a new role tomorrow as a hotel receptionist, my first full time job (40hrs per week) & I'm so nervous!

Really scared I'll be tired and won't manage all the hours every week & I'm worried that I won't be good at it.

Good luck!

When you’re being shown how to do things, take notes. And don’t expect to remember everyone’s names the first time round.

maddiemookins16mum · 08/05/2019 21:40

Eat breakfast, a good one (even though you won’t fancy it).

saturdayhelpme · 08/05/2019 21:41

@EmpressLesbianInChair good tips! Not sure if there will be time for notes😅 my manager (who is lovely!) said learning on the job is the best approach. I hope it's busy tomorrow so I don't have time to wait around and think too much.

@maddiemookins16mum Definitely! Thankfully my shift tomorrow is 1pm-10pm so I will get a good breakfast & lunch in for energy. I feel so sick tonight.

saturdayhelpme · 08/05/2019 21:49

Smile and when you can make an effort with everybody

CheekyFuckersDontGetPastMe · 08/05/2019 23:23

Take note of those ready to help you, we love a newbie.

Take lots of notes and ask where the toilets are and rest room if not shown around, I spent 3 days of not going to the toilet once because I only knew where customer toilets were!

Don’t be afraid to ask questions and say if you don’t know an answer - someone will.

Don’t write anyone off or listen to gossip, make your own mind up about others.

Smile! Even when on the phone and never slam the phone down after a call even when passing the call through internally.

Be polite, friendly and professional with everyone you work with from the car parking team, cleaners, waitresses, bar staff, cleaners you never know who you will need a favour from and always help everyone out where you are allowed to.

For all of the above relay back to your manager. We hire you because we want you to do well, enjoy and good luck.

scarus · 09/05/2019 07:35

Don't be discouraged if all you manage to do in the first 2 weeks is work, eat, sleep. It doesn't mean you can't do the job long term. It will get much easier once your brain knows what you are doing and your body gets used to standing.

saturdayhelpme · 09/05/2019 11:16

@scarus That's such an amazing tip, thank you! I'm actually really worried about that, that I'll get burnt out and won't be able to do it. But you're right, just focus on each day and after 2 weeks it'll be easy, second nature. Smile

About to get ready, leaving at 1pm, I'll update later tonight when I get home.

As others have said...
.
Make notes. ..smile...say hello to everyone ...especially cleaners etc.
It will be noted. (It was one or the things that was commented on postively when I was a placement student...that I made an effort with everyone). ..

Be the colleague you want to have.

IamtheDevilsAvocado · 09/05/2019 12:10

Go the extra mile...

If someone is lost /panicked....smile more...make sure they understand the instruction. ..

Circe32 · 09/05/2019 12:36

Comfortable and supportive shoes!

saturdayhelpme · 09/05/2019 12:43

@Circe32 I have to wear heels so unfortunately that won't be happening Grin

ememem84 · 09/05/2019 12:54

I hope you mean you’re starting work at 2pm. Leaving at 1pm for a 1pm start probably won’t look good....

But that aside, smile, and thank people and absolutely agree with the “being nice to everyone” comment above. I work with some people who look down on the mail room staff (for example). Funnily enough they don’t get any favours from them...

saturdayhelpme · 09/05/2019 13:03

@ememem84 I start at 1.30, it's only a 15 min drive Smile

IAmTheChosenOne · 09/05/2019 13:05

I have to wear heels Why? It's gender based discrimination. And covered in exisiting legislation, the title in the link is crap but it does explain why there was no need for specific legislation .

ememem84 · 09/05/2019 14:31

@saturdayhelpme phew!!

Hope it’s all going well!!! Xx

CheekyFuckersDontGetPastMe · 09/05/2019 17:53
